Read MoreIf you are looking for a great place to eat in Upper Manhattan, you have come to the right place. Spanning from the east side of 96th Street up to the very tip of Manhattan Island, Upper Manhattan is home to a rich history, diverse cultures, and several must-visit New York City restaurants. From Spanish Harlem to Inwood, this article will point you towards the best restaurant in each Upper Manhattan neighborhood. Keep reading to eat your way through the five best restaurants in Upper Manhattan.
East Harlem, also known as El Barrio or Spanish Harlem, is a neighborhood in the northeastern part of Manhattan in New York City. Fifth Avenue bounds the neighborhood on the east, Central Park on the south, 110th Street on the west, and the Harlem River on the north.
Hungry locals and visitors flock to Teranga, a Senegalese restaurant with a menu that celebrates the flavors and ingredients of West Africa.
The restaurant's name, Teranga, is a Senegal word that represents the culture's reverence for warm hospitality. Although it doesn't translate exactly to English, the sentiment gives an idea of what one can expect from a meal at Teranga: nutritious ingredients, delicious recipes, and great service.
Beyond the menu, Teranga pays homage to the region by sourcing numerous ingredients from small business partners in Africa. These "superfoods" are packed with essential nutrients and can be grown with sustainable farming practices. Anyone who wants to support Upper Manhattan while doing good for the global community will love this restaurant.
It's hard to take a trip to Harlem without hearing mention of the fantastic soul food at Sylvia's.
Harlem is a vibrant and historic neighborhood in Upper Manhattan famous for its music, art, and delicious restaurants. Sylvia's offers an irresistible variety of comfort foods like mouth-watering barbecue and home-style classics like mac and cheese.
The restaurant was founded in 1962, after the tenacious owner, Sylvia Woods, purchased a small restaurant where she waited tables. At the time, the restaurant would only seat around 30 people. Today, it's a bustling staple of the Upper Manhattan restaurant scene and possibly the most famous restaurant in Harlem. It's no wonder Sylvia Woods is now known as the "Queen of Soul Food."
If you're looking for some of the best sushi restaurants in New York, head to Hamilton Heights. This beloved neighborhood features some of the best restaurants in Upper Manhattan, and MamaSushi is a stand-out option. MamaSushi diners will discover traditional Japanese cuisine and fresh sushi blended with the delicious flavors and ingredients of Latin America.
Aptly dubbed "Latin Sushi," the unique rolls at MamaSushi put a new spin on the classics by incorporating beautifully marinated meats, fried plantains, pico de Gallo, and more. The result is a one-of-a-kind multi-cultural taste.
The restaurant's executive chef, David Nuñez, strives to keep pushing the limits of Asian-Latino fusion with the "More Than Sushi" concept. By constantly fine-tuning and updating the extensive menu of appetizers and entrees, regulars can always look forward to trying something new at MamaSushi.
Although the franchise has three locations in NYC, its Hamilton Heights restaurant will always be a favorite among Upper Manhattan diners.
The exciting culture of the Washington Heights neighborhood was introduced to the global audience in the Broadway play "In The Heights." This one-of-a-kind community is located in Upper Manhattan and spans from 155th Street up to the Fort George area. Highbridge Park and Fort Washington Park surround the neighborhood on both sides, ensuring that outdoor fun is never hard to find.
One of the best places to get a taste of the neighborhood's flavor is Malecon. This family-owned restaurant specializes in traditional Dominican cuisine. The menu features classic dishes like authentic fried fish, mofongo de chicharron, and boiled green bananas. The most iconic menu item is the rotisserie chicken, which can be admired through the window at any of this local franchise's locations.
Inwood's claim to fame is as the northernmost neighborhood in Manhattan. That said, there's much more to love about the Inwood neighborhood. The commercial district on Broadway is home to a mix of mom-and-pop stores and restaurants, and the area's tree-lined streets make for a pleasant walk. The Dyckman Farmhouse Museum is NYC's last Dutch colonial farmhouse. As you stroll through the bustling urban area, it's hard to imagine a time when this area was considered "rural."
Just across the street from the farmhouse is Inwood Bar & Grill. This restaurant features a diverse menu with something for everyone, from burgers and pizza to seafood and steak. The bar also has a wide selection of beers to be enjoyed in their relaxing beer garden. Boasting over 50 flat-screen TVs, Inwood Bar & Grill is a great place to watch your favorite sports team. Meanwhile, the private hall is perfectly suited for more intimate events.
If you are looking for a great meal in Upper Manhattan, look no further. Our list of the top five restaurants covers the best options in each neighborhood, including East Harlem, Harlem, Hamilton Heights, Washington Heights, and Inwood. We hope you will take the time to explore all of these fantastic dining destinations and enjoy everything they have to offer. Bon appétit!

Looking for a great restaurant floors below your home? Gray Hawk Grill (1556 2nd Ave) just launched an elevated room service offering to the residents of Beckford House & Tower on the Upper East Side. Beckford residents at 301 E. 80th Street and 301 E. 81st Street are now able to order brunch and dinner from neighborhood favorite Gray Hawk Grill directly to their apartment door.
This isn’t your typical delivery offering though. After an order is placed (with a minimum spend of $50 for brunch and $100 for dinner), a Gray Hawk Grill waiter will arrange a dropoff time via a dedicated bar cart for the building. Dishes are served just the way they'd be presented at the restaurant with no plastic containers of any kind to make this an environmentally friendly choice. Afterwards, the customer rings the restaurant when they’d like the dishes taken back.
This At Your Door Room Service offering provides a hotel-like amenity to a luxury residential building where available units go for upwards of $27 million dollars.
Brunch specialties include avocado toast, eggs benedict, pancakes, steak & eggs, and a challah french toast casserole. Dinner entrees include Cacio e Pepe, roasted chicken, sauteed shrimp, Miso Black Cod, Norwegian Salmon, blackened tuna steak, and dishes from the grill such as filet mignon. Raw bar options are also available including littleneck clams, oysters, and a shellfish platter.
Millan also hopes to expand to neighboring buildings in the area in the coming months especially as the temperatures begin to dip and more and more New Yorkers opt for meals at home in the colder months ahead.

Last year it was all about the best outdoor restaurants to celebrate the holidays. This year we are inside and up above New York, able to see all the glitz and glamour the city has to offer. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite rooftop bars in New York City, where you’ll be hard to miss us.
PHD Terrace at Dream Midtown returns for the unveiling of their yearly holiday installation, Midwinter Nights’ Dream. Just in time for the holiday season, the popular all-season midtown rooftop will be transformed into a whimsical dreamland of lush greenery, rich emerald & gold tones, 10,000 twinkling lights illuminating the space, florals galore, fuzzy throw blankets, and an ascending series of tiered red, purple & gold florals throughout the space.
Of course, this installation wouldn’t be complete without New York’s most famous flower tunnel - the winterized edition will take the highly photogenic moment to the next level. Seasonal food and beverage offerings will also be available including light bites, a brand-new themed dessert, plus new winter cocktails. This magical Midwinter Nights’ Dream garden at PHD Terrace was created to cure a bad case of the winter blues and will be activated from now until April 2022.

In the cooler months, guests enjoy floor-to-ceiling vistas from its lounge, including the Hudson River, Hudson Yards, Times Square and the Empire State Building. The Skylark is also a coveted event space for weddings, birthdays and corporate events.
The cocktail program is the creation of Master Mixologist Johnny Swet, The Skylark’s long-time cocktail consultant and a 24-year veteran of New York City’s hospitality scene. His seasonal cocktails riff on the classics with market fresh autumnal ingredients and include the Pumpkin Spiced Mule, Warm Rum Apple Cider, Maple Walnut Old Fashioned, Coconut & Cinnamon Caipirinha and others. BOMBAY SAPPHIRE is proud to unveil its inaugural holiday window display, celebrating the new artistic guard and New York City’s creative comeback. Though the BOMBAY SAPPHIRE holiday windows are inspired by the traditional 5th Avenue holiday window displays, these have a deeper purpose: to revitalize downtown Manhattan which was stripped of many anchor businesses and to provide a platform for emerging creatives. This avant-garde Holiday Storefront Series will take place in SoHo through December 19th, in collaboration with visual artist Shavanté Royster, the disruptive fashion designer Romeo Hunte, and New York City dancer Nicole Von Arx.
Over the past year and a half, the pandemic has decimated the livelihood of creatives, small businesses, and retail in New York and beyond. To uplift the artistic community and bring a diverse, vibrant energy to the traditional holiday displays, BOMBAY SAPPHIRE, who has a longstanding history in championing equal representation in the arts and inspiring creativity, has commissioned these visionaries from diverse fields to transform otherwise empty storefronts into veritable ‘windows of art’.
The backdrop of each window features a winter dreamscape by artist Shavanté Royster, which also graces the label of the BOMBAY SAPPHIRE new Limited-Edition Gift Pack HERE. This Holiday Storefront Series will light up SoHo during December to mimic the holiday magic of 5th Avenue through the eyes of Shavanté and Romeo, featuring live models clad in Romeo’s winter apparel against Shavanté’s contemporary picturesque snowy backdrop, along with performances by New York City dancers and local bar-hopping experiences. Romeo Hunte’s dedicated window will feature people clad in two bespoke designs that he created exclusively for the space, depicting them getting ready for a holiday show over cocktails. Featuring Romeo’s playful sensibility, the garments were inspired by Shavanté’s depiction with the color of the jumpsuit playing off the yellow snowboards, sun and hot air balloons and the billows of the garment responding to the ski slopes. His New York edge is showcased in the jacket and pants look, mashing up tailored, preppy and street styles that tie into Shavanté’s BOMBAY SAPPHIRE-inspired blue colorscape. The locations of the windows are as follows:
Cantina Rooftop is one you won’t want your readers to miss! The Hell’s Kitchen Modern Mexican dining experience helmed by Executive Chef Saul Montiel features a climate-controlled retractable glass rooftop and a beyond gorgeous skyline view perfect for those snowy nights to come.
