How to Decorate Your Patio for Summer Living

With the weather getting warmer and brighter with each passing day, you might be looking for a new space to entertain and spend some peaceful time in your apartment. And if you have an outdoor space like a balcony, you may already be looking to those doors to make your way out this summer.

outdoor-living-plants.jpg

Especially as COVID-19 restrictions are lifting in New York City, people still want to be cautious and careful with their health and wellness. So while you might not be ready to go out to the bars and clubs, entertaining friends and family at your place is always an option you can control.

Your patio or outdoor space should be the perfect place to unwind. If you’re looking for the best ways to decorate your city patio or balcony, here are some ideas you can check out.

1. Start With the Furniture

One of the first things you might want to consider when decorating your patio or balcony is the type of furniture you want to have around and use. The kind of furniture you want to include on your patio depends on what you want to do with your space.

If you want to entertain and have places to serve summer treats, invest in a nice coffee table or dining table for outdoor eating. If you’d rather read and listen to music with just one pal, put your focus on comfortable chairs.

2. Plants Everywhere

This pointer can be especially helpful for those who live in urban settings without much greenery outside. Whether you have a flat patio, a tiny balcony, or a terrace, putting plants all around can truly make you feel like you’re experiencing the outdoors.

You can use planter boxes, hanging plants, or simple potted plants. You can even grow fruits and vegetables that are easy in urban environments like tomatoes and cucumbers.

Take inspiration from some of the best-designed outdoor spaces NYC buildings have to offer. Private and community terraces alike offer a more serene setting with plenty of potted plants and greenery to dress up an outdoor seating area. Small trees and shrubbery can be low-maintenance with all the benefits of nature.

3. Light It Up

Even in the summer, the sun goes down. That’s why it can be functional and aesthetically pleasing to find lights that work for your patio.

While using a standard porch light can be a great starting point, finding string lights, fairy lights, and other lighting solutions — like outdoor candles or torches — can both cast light into unexpected places and add to the chic style of your outdoor space.

summer-outdoor-living-nyc.jpg

4. Establish Social Space

This one might depend on exactly how much space you have, but if you’re looking to entertain in your space, leaving a bit of standing room can help out a lot. Nobody likes to feel cramped, especially if you’re socially distancing. Know the purpose of your space so you can design it accordingly. And if that includes a bit of extra room, don’t ignore that need!

Many large residential buildings in New York City have designed patio spaces to accommodate several groups of residents, allowing for small gatherings that don’t create crowding. 25 Park Row, for example, is a tower structured with terraces and balconies to boost its biophilic design philosophy. If you don’t own your own outdoor space, securing a unit with well-design outdoor space can still provide plenty of summer socialization.

5. Throw Some Shade

The summer sun can be a bit hot. That’s why having a place to get outside but still get some shade can be a great balance. Each balcony and patio will require its own shade solutions and shade structures. While some will work best with a parasol, others might require an awning.

If nothing else, a nice umbrella can usually get the job done. Find something that matches your style and you should be good to go!

Decorating Your City Patio for Summer

Each patio and balcony is different. Living in the hustle and bustle of New York, you deserve an outdoor space where you can relax, entertain, or do any mix of the two. It’s all about finding what works with your personal style and taking things from there.

From the furniture to the lighting, there are so many ways to use your outdoor space for function and style. Do you have a favorite decorating technique for outdoor spaces?

Gabriella Pryor

While the pandemic has stopped the usual way we dine out, that hasn't stopped these spots from continuing to cater to the public. Whether you're a local, traveling for work, or safely escaping your regular quarantine location, these are some places you should definitely check out for a memorable afternoon or evening outing.

EP & LP - West Hollywood

When cruising through busy West Hollywood looking for a multi-versed stop, EP & LP  has you covered. Although Asian Eating House, EP,  is temporarily closed,  that doesn’t stop their outdoor LP rooftop from flourishing 4 pm - 2 am, Monday-Friday and 12 pm-2 pm Saturday & Sunday,  serving refreshing drinks and bites to enjoy a prime view of the Hollywood Hills and Sunset Boulevard that will leave you feeling like a local and tourist all in one.

ADRIFT Burger Bar LA - Venice

If milkshakes are your forte, ADRIFT Burger Bar is the stop for you. Featuring Michelin starred David Myers’ burgers to pair them with and the beach just steps away, there isn’t much to be upset about. Open 11:30 am-9 pm Monday-Sunday, the combo options are truly limitless. Ambassador Rosemary DiCarlo, Christian Elliott, The Honorable Joanne King Herring, Vicki Hollub, and Kevin Hyland OBE were honored by UN Women For Peace Association (UNWFPA) at their Annual Awards Luncheon on Tuesday, May 3, 2022 at Casa Cipriani. Rosanna Scotto hosted the celebration, welcoming guests she said, “As a reporter and co-host of FOX 5’s, Good Day New York, I have been lucky enough to be able to use my platform to highlight women’s stories. We have a mission to make sure that women can achieve the equality they deserve. This year’s Awards Luncheon is to celebrate the life and legacy of a strong woman who always fought for equality; UNWFPA Founder, Dame Muna Rihani Al-Nasser.”

Mr. Nassir Abdulaziz Al- Nasser, with their son, Aziz Al-Nasser in the audience. “UN Women for Peace Association will continue to support women and girls with our new Muna Rihani Al-Nasser Scholarship Fund for educating at-risk and underprivileged girls”, shared Rema.

Actress Fran Drescher made the keynote address, sharing her own powerful story, “I became a victim of violence when I was raped at gunpoint in my own home by a man I did not know, who was out on parole. But I was one of the lucky ones, because I lived to identify my assailant and see him sentenced to 150 years in prison. Still, for a year afterwards I felt like a mirror image of myself that was cracked in a thousand pieces. But connecting to one’s trauma, turning pain into purpose, and time are all healing. I am a survivor!”

Rema later announced “Over 94% of violence against women stems from men, which affirms our belief that the solution does too. That is why we are launching a new campaign called Counting On Men — as we believe without addressing men and boys, we will not make progress on the issues related to violence against women and girls.”

The celebration included performances by Wendy Moten, singing Somewhere Over The Rainbow, and country star Drew Baldridge singing his original song She’s Somebody’s Daughter.

International Friends of Festival Verdi Spring Gala

The International Friends of Festival Verdi announced their plans for their 22nd season at dinner in a private club and limited to just 180 guests on April 28th.  The evening was curated by chef Massimo Bottura and his team from Osteria Francescana, the three-Michelin-star restaurant based in Modena, known as the hardest reservation to get in the world!

Eleonora Buratto and Anna Maria by PMC/Getty

The Mayor of Parma, Federico Pizzarotti, The Scientific Director of Teatro Regio, Francesco Izzo, and Teatro Regio di Parma's General Director, Anna Maria Meo, and the president of the International Friends of Festival Verdi, James E. Miller and executive director Silvia Frieser, announced the program for the coming season (September 22 through October 16th) and the beauty of, “seeing Verdi in the land of Verdi, to live where he lived, performed in theaters where he worked, with the sound as he knew it, having the food and wine he knew grown in his own terroir.”  This is the unique proposition of Festival Verdi.  In 2022 the performances include three staged operas La Forza del DestinoIl Trovatore, and Simon Boccanegra each based on a contemporary Spanish play that Verdi admired.  These seminal works were brought to his attention through the talented actress Margherita Barezzi, his then mistress and later his second wife, who spoke fluent Spanish.  This is a unique chance to consider these works side by side.

The menu was presented in an emotional speech by Massimo Bottura who took great pains to explain the dishes, their preparation, and what they represented to him – an edible autobiography.  The spectacular hors d’oeuvre and five course meal, made with ingredients of the region and paired with its wines, provided topics of conversation making the room instantly one.  Courses included “Beautiful, Psychedelic Spin Painted Veal”, which was a tribute to Damien Hirst and a deconstructed “Crunchy Part of the Lasagna,” a tribute to the chef’s mother.

The evening also offered superb music by soprano Eleonora Buratto performing Verdi’s tragic aria, Morrò, ma prima in grazia from Un Ballo in Maschera followed by Un bel di from Madam Butterfly ---the role she is currently performing at The Met.  It brought tears to many eyes.

The evening’s guest of honor was conductor Ricardo Frizza who has been thrilling audiences with The Met’s Lucia di Lammermoor.  Other guests included Bill Buford and Jessica Green, Francois Payard, Ruth Reichl, Barbara Tober, and Laurent Tourondel.
