Foragers Table Re-Opens With Worldly New Executive Chef Olivier Palazzo

A quiet corridor in the heart of Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood once again pulses with culinary vitality with the reopening of Foragers Market and their restaurant, Foragers Table. The decade-old farm-to-table favorite – which closed during the Pandemic – is now helmed by new Executive Chef Olivier Palazzo, and features his boldly reimagined “modern-Mediterranean” menu along with a far-sighted wine and cocktails program.

Worldly and well-traveled, Palazzo’s influence will also extend to the Market’s beloved “grab-and-go” grocery. And the restaurant – tucked gently just beyond the Market – will debut an after-hours live music program with a relaxed and jazzy vibe.

“Olivier embodies a younger, more international, more inclusive generation that is increasingly calling New York City home,” says Anna Castellani, who owns Foragers’ Chelsea location with partner Michael D’Amato. “His mix of cuisines and focus on vegetables not only reflects the future of food – but the future of New York itself.” 

Born in West Africa and raised in the South of France, Palazzo’s contemporary, plant-focused cuisine is global, sustainable and nourishing for body and soul. Working with local purveyors across the Hudson Valley, Palazzo and Castellani have devised a season-driven dining experience that marries the best in regional bounty with French, Italian and Israeli flavors and techniques. A veteran of Parisian restaurants such as the Michelin-starred Le Quinzième – as well as Cyril Lignac’s Aux Prés and Le Chardenoux – Palazzo formally joined the Foragers family in February.

“My grandfather was actually from Sicily, so our Mediterranean-with-a-twist menu feels completely authentic to me,” says Palazzo, who began cooking for his own family during his early childhood in the Ivory Coast. “Plus, I’m a long-time Chelsea resident who’s been eating at Foragers for years – they just didn’t know that I was a chef!”

The reopening of Foragers Table marks the latest milestone for co-owner Castellani, the creative mind behind Dekalb Market Hall – the largest food hall in all of Brooklyn – along with The Hugh Food Hall in Midtown. In April, Castellani will open ANA Bar & Eatery, an all-day restaurant, marketplace and eatery at The Hudson Yards.

Inside The Fifth Annual French Heritage Society Book Award Ceremony

Last week, the New York Chapter of French Heritage Society (FHS) celebrated the winning author of the Fifth Annual French Heritage Society Book Award, Agnès Poirier, for her evocative Notre-Dame: The Soul of France on Thursday, April 7, 2022, at the headquarters of Villa Albertine in NYC.

The program featured a pre-reception, book signing, and discussion with Ms. Poirier moderated by Laura Auricchio, Dean of Fordham College at Lincoln Center, as well as an elegant cocktail reception for all attendees. Judith Roze, Deputy Cultural Counselor of France in the United States, and Elizabeth Stribling, Chairman of FHS and Award Co-Chair, offered welcoming remarks ahead of the discussion. Christian Draz, FHS Board Member and Award Co-Chair, presented Ms. Poirier with the Jefferson Cup and $5,000 prize.

The event was made possible by Co-Chairs Elizabeth Stribling and Christian Draz; the FHS Book Award Steering Committee, Yann Coatanlem, Janet Desforges, Patricia Forelle, and Clydette de Groot; and the New York Chapter Co-Chairmen, Guy Robinson and Odile de Schiétère-Longchampt. A jury comprised of Cheryl Hurley, Anne Poulet, and Bruno Racine chose Notre-Dame: The Soul of France unanimously from a shortlist of five titles that illuminate elements of French cultural or historical patrimony.

Scott is seeing very competitive bidding situations, and strong buyers are winning.  Your 2021 Federal and State Tax Returns will undoubtedly be required for financing and Board review as applicable – do not wait until April 18 to file. 

The team recently worked with a buyer who just moved from overseas and did not have a 2021 tax return. As a result, the buyer was on the losing end of three 3 bidding wars. The fourth time was a charm, Scott was able to call on a personal relationship with a member of the Board and appeal for special dispensation.  

With proper preparation, the higher bid does not always win. 

Rising interest rates are creating an even greater sense of urgency in an already frenetic market. A successful buyer will have a pre-approval in hand and a mortgage relationship just a phone call away. 

Case in point: Two buyers were vying for the team’s listing Downtown. One buyer had a preapproval, was outbid, and had to obtain a new preapproval. Simultaneously, a second buyer came in with an even higher bid.  Luckily, the first buyer demonstrated their financial qualifications, and the seller decided to stay with them. 

The clearer, the better. 

When communicating your offer, your agent will paint a picture of your financial standing with the seller’s agent. Make sure they have a clear understanding of your compensation package, stock options and bonus structure, as well as portfolio accounts and ancillary sources of income. 

Scott recently worked with a buyer with approximately $20 million in assets. The individual is retired, and income is derived by continually selling-off and buying new investments as part of their real estate investment portfolio. The activity can be confusing, and success is found in Scott’s ability to help the listing agent understand. 

Reputation matters. 

Your broker’s reputation can add or subtract from your bottom line. In a competitive market, you need to work with an agent that has strong relationships and an equally strong reputation within the brokerage community to avoid any overarching feeling of mistrust.

Although every bidding war will not be won, buyers find comfort in understanding why. In a recent competitive situation, Scott’s relationship with the listing agent allowed him to know that his buyer was the third highest offer and still lost by over $100,000! In another situation, his client won the bidding, and this was purely because of his relationship with the listing agent whom he happened to be working on another simultaneous deal with. Through those interactions, she knew that time was not being wasted and that the buyers were as qualified as they were serious about the property.

Carnegie Hill Development Purchased by Renowned Zeckendorf Development

TALEA Beer Co. is the only exclusively woman and veteran-owned and founded production brewery (and taproom) in NYC.

The final week pays homage to Chef Shani and how he started his career walking through the old streets of Jerusalem and appreciating the smells, sounds, and flavors.  The old streets of Jerusalem were the birthplace of Chef Shani’s philosophy on produce and food, and many of the flavors on the menu will be reminiscent of those days.

Industry Veteran Joins Compass Sales Team in the Hamptons

Last year, Compass was involved in approximately 30.0 percent of all residential real estate transactions at or above $10 million in the Hamptons, totaling  $2.84 billion in transaction volume. Joining Compass in the Hamptons to aid in this substantial presence within the ultra-luxury market is industry veteran and respected local executive Charles Manger. Manger joins Compass following an extensive career in the financial and real estate industries, previously establishing NYC-based Brown Harris Stevens as a brokerage on the East End and serving as a board member for the Hamptons and North Fork Realtors’ Association.
