The Catcher in the Rye is one of the most famous works of American literature. Still studied to this day in schools and universities throughout the nation and around the world, JD Salinger's portrayal of teenage angst and alienation continues to strike a chord with readers today, almost 70 years after it was first published.
Most of the action of the novel takes place in Manhattan. After being expelled from boarding school, Holden heads to New York, repulsed by the phoniness of the people around him. Mid-century Manhattan is portrayed in great detail in the book, so the city is almost like another character in the narrative.
New York is a city that is forever changing, and the Manhattan that JD Salinger wrote about is gone forever. However, a lot of the same landmarks still remain. If you're a fan of The Catcher in the Rye, following Holden's progress through the city is a great way to explore.
Holden experiences New York on foot, and that’s the best way to follow his example. Drop your bags at a New York luggage storage shop and set out to see New York through the eyes of one of its most famous literary sons.
Holden Caulfield’s Manhattan journey begins here. So it's a great place to begin yours too. The station was redeveloped in the 60s, so not much remains of the way it looked during Holden's time. But there are a few remnants here and there that will set the scene for your literary exploration.
Over the course of its existence, Penn Station has been the starting point of countless New York adventures. To this day, people arrive here from around the country and around the world, looking to start a new life in the Big Apple. While not a tourist attraction in the traditional sense, its certainly an atmospheric place to visit.
You can get more of a glimpse of the way Penn Station would have been in the early 1950s on a guided tour.
In the book, Holden walks from Central Park to the American Museum of Natural History, remembering his visits there as a child. He reflects on how the exhibits would never move or change, so that when you went back to see them again, the only thing that would have changed would be the visitor themselves.
However, the museum has changed since Holden's day. Many of the exhibits he fondly remembers have been removed, while others have been changed. Holden never steps inside the museum in the book, but there's no reason why you shouldn't.
With its displays of animals and plants from across the country, the American Museum of Natural History is a fun and educational place to visit for all ages. Kids will especially love the dinosaur displays that allow them to get as close as you'd ever want to a Tyrannosaurus rex.
Holden Caulfield's journey through Manhattan takes place in the winter. For true authenticity, you may want to follow his example. If so, you'll be able to visit the outdoor skating rink in front of the Rockefeller Center.
This is where Holden goes on a disastrous date with Sally in the novel. Hopefully, your visit will have a happier conclusion. If you don't have your own skates, you can rent a pair at the rink and enjoy a classic New York winter activity.
Holden goes to the museum better known as the Met to meet his sister Phoebe. In a poignant scene, she asks to come with him on his planned journey west to live isolated from society.
Even if it didn’t feature in the novel, the Met is well worth a visit on any trip to New York. As one of the world's premier art museums, it features artwork from around the world, spanning the course of human history. The Egyptian gallery is home to William the Hippopotamus, the museum's mascot, as well as some mummies that Salinger mentions in The Catcher in the Rye.
You can't visit New York without visiting Central Park. But for Salinger fans, the park and its pond have special significance. It's here that Holden wonders about the ducks, and whether they migrate in the winter when the water freezes over.
The pond is very much still a part of New York, and you'll still see ducks on it just like Holden did. To this day, the New York Parks Board receives multiple inquiries every year, asking the same question Holden did about where the ducks go when the water freezes over.
Of course, Central Park is also one of New York’s best locations for people watching. If the weather allows for it, bring a picnic lunch and spread yourself out on the grass to enjoy this oasis of calm amid the bustle of Manhattan.
Holden Caulfield’s Manhattan journey is a vaguely circular wandering that brings him into contact with the same places over and over again. But it's at the Central Park Zoo, where he takes Phoebe to cheer her up, that the novel reaches its emotional conclusion.
Central Park Zoo is small but still in operation, housing snow leopards, grizzly bears, red pandas, sea lions, and other animals. The carousel is still there too. In fact, it's the same carousel that was in the park in Salinger's time, the one that Phoebe rides in the conclusion of the book. It's the perfect place to end your Holden Caulfield inspired trip through Manhattan.

If you're part of the approximately 650 million people who are living with a disability, there may be some challenges faced in your home's decor. Whether your disability is something you will live with for your entire life or if it's a temporary disability caused by an accident, you may need to make some changes such as making your bathroom spacious or even installing bathroom radiators to your home to accommodate yourself.. Below are a few home renovation projects that may make your day to day life at home easier without sacrificing your personal style.
If you are remodeling your home only because of your disability, you may qualify for a tax break. In the IRS' document with tax highlights for those with disabilities, it says that "improvements to a home that do not increase its value if the main purpose is medical care. An example is constructing entrance or exit ramps." The items on this list are all renovations that are all intended to increase accessibility, so it's possible they can qualify. Make sure to check with an accountant if you're unsure.
Something small that you may not consider when it comes to accessibility is the difficulty that can come from doorknobs. If you choose a knob instead of a handle, it can be hard for someone who problems with their hands to open doors. If you or someone in your household has this kind of issue, handles can be very useful. Someone who may struggle with a traditional knob will be able to open and close doors without having to firmly grip a knob, giving that person more freedom and better accessibility.
To make sure that your door handles fit with the decor of your home, you can look for colors or metals that fit with the theme of the room. For a more cohesive look, you can choose one type of handle that you can use on every door in the house.
If you or someone in your household uses a wheelchair, you'll probably need to widen doorways to make them more accessible. If you're doing this, you can also take the chance to try out a new style of door in your home. Try painting your new doors a fun, bright hue to bring a pop of color into your home. You can also restain the door to match your decor if you buy a door just because it's the right size without thought for your decor. The average doorframe is 28 inches, while accessible doorframes are 32 inches, so make sure to double-check the measurements of a door before buying it for a widened doorway.
A ramp is key to accessibility if you or someone in your home has mobility problems that require a wheelchair. Although you may think of a wheelchair ramp and envision a metal contraption with obvious gripping pads on it, your wheelchair ramp doesn't have to look that way. You can have a wheelchair ramp without negatively impacting the curb appeal of your home -- you will just need to be creative. The first step is to find a contractor who will work with you to design a ramp that blends seamlessly with your home's exterior. If your front door has a small stoop made with stone, you can look into adding a ramp to it that is made of the same stone so that your ramp blends easily into the existing porch. You can also install a wooden ramp that won't clash with the exterior of your home. Make sure that the grade of the ramp isn't too steep and that the ramp has some grip to it so that you or the person in your household doesn't have trouble with the ramp once the temperatures begin to drop.
If you are redesigning a room and you or someone in your home needs it to be more accessible, you will have to take a few factors into account. What types of accessibility changes do you need? Does there need to be a path wide enough for a wheelchair? Is someone visually impaired and needs things to be placed in a certain way so they can navigate?
When thinking of your furniture layout, start with what you can't or don't want to change, such as where a radiator is located. Although moving a radiator is possible, it may make more sense for your heating system to keep it where it is depending on the layout of your home. If you've had your furnace for more than 15-20 years, it may need replacing, which could be an opportunity to change up your entire heating system. However, if you don't want to move a radiator or other fixture, make sure you're designing around that as well as any specifications required by a person's disability.
Slipping and falling are very common accidents. In fact, in 2015 there were more than 20,000 slip and fall injuries reported in workplaces in California alone. To avoid getting a slip and fall injury in your home, make sure you're thinking through your flooring choices. Although rugs can be anti-slip, they aren't as accessible for people in wheelchairs. There are countless options for flooring, and because of this, you can find a flooring choice that matches both your decor and your accessibility needs. If you do your research, you can definitely find the perfect flooring for you and those in your household.
Having a disability doesn't mean that you have to sacrifice style for accessibility. It's possible to keep your home's style intact no matter what kind of disability you have. Finding more stylish options may take more digging, but it's definitely possible.

Congress Hall, located at 177 Main Street in East Hampton is one of the East End’s oldest houses. But that’s not something you might notice upon first glance.
Originally a Colonial saltbox dating back to 1680 (East Hampton was settled in 1648) and owned by the Mulfords, a founding family of the Village, the structure was built using no nails, only joined wood. It was named in the mid-19th century, as proprietor David Mulford, a bachelor, used it as a gathering place for local men to discuss politics.
Today, the $4.495 million home, represented by Enzo Morabito of Douglas Elliman, has been expanded and reimagined as a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. The transformation from old world to new—rebuilt to exacting standards and historic district specifications by East End builder William Hugo—now presents as an art-filled abode with modern touches throughout. Featuring five bedrooms and five-and-a-half marble baths, a Boffi-designed kitchen, three fireplaces, state-of-the-art technology, a lower level with media/rec room and playroom, the luxe 5,500-square-foot shingle-style compound has kept many of its original historic accents and charms. Additional amenities at the half-acre property, which overlooks the East Hampton “Town Green,” include a wrap-around Gunite pool, covered front porch, shed/studio and detached two-car garage/potential recreational space.
This three bedroom, two bath beauty is the Brooklyn gem you've been waiting for. From the moment you walk through the door, your mood will be elevated by the natural sunlight streaming in through the grand 16 foot wall of windows. This thoughtfully appointed, luxurious space is open concept; offering a seamless flow of comfort and uniquely chic living. State of the art kitchen appliances and an over-abundance of storage anchor this home. The main floor master is designed with privacy in mind. Need to work remotely from home--no problem as there is also a home office area that does the trick. If the ambiance of sleek elegance with modern custom lighting and design touches are not enough, hopefully the glorious private rooftop cabana with elevator access and soaring views of Brooklyn and Manhattan will seal the deal.
