Meliá Hotels International Celebrates New Direct Flight + Summer Travel to Spain with Live for the Arts Cultural Event

Last week Meliá Hotels International, Spain’s leading hotel company, hosted a multi-day celebration to kick-off summer travel to Spain. The company hosted an exclusive dinner at Peak Restaurant at Hudson Yards on Wednesday, May 4 followed by an immersive cultural event the following evening - titled Live for the Arts - that brought the beauty of the Spanish Balearic Islands to New York City, at the INNSiDE by Meliá New York NoMad.  

Timed to United Airline’s June launch of its new direct flight from Newark Liberty International Airport to Mallorca Palma Airport and Tenerife South Airport in Spain, Meliá Hotels International hosted a private dinner with the tourism leaders and executives from Palma de Mallorca, New York City, Meliá Hotels International and United Airlines. The dinner was hosted at the Peak Restaurant at Hudson Yards to celebrate the new flights to Mallorca and Tenerife while introducing key New York City travel executives to the Balearic Islands.

On Thursday, May 5th, Live for the Arts brought to life the extraordinary works of internationally renowned authors, artists, chefs, and musicians from collective Mallorca and New York regions. The evening’s exhibition spotlighted three pillars: Literature & the Arts, Eats, and Music, giving New Yorkers a taste of what they can experience at all 24 Meliá Hotels International hotels and resorts in Palma de Mallorca and Tenerife.

Having completely transformed INNSiDE by Meliá New York Nomad into a Mallorca paradise, the event featured engaging conversations, pop-up exhibits, live performances, and art installations from local New York and Spanish talents, including Grason Ratowsky,  SebastiaÌ Portell, Megan Milks, Paula Bonet, Virginia Feito, Elif Batuman and Aina Zanoguera. Curated by New York and Spain’s top creative minds, Live for the Arts also featured additional interactive experiences from The Locker Room, Graff Tours, Art Start, Rizzoli Bookstore, La Pajarita Colmado, and Rata Corner.  This summer, New Yorkers can seamlessly discover Meliá’s quintessential Spanish hospitality and commitment to responsible tourism through United’s new direct flight.

Especially as COVID-19 restrictions are lifting in New York City, people still want to be cautious and careful with their health and wellness. So while you might not be ready to go out to the bars and clubs, entertaining friends and family at your place is always an option you can control.

Your patio or outdoor space should be the perfect place to unwind. If you’re looking for the best ways to decorate your city patio or balcony, here are some ideas you can check out.

1. Start With the Furniture

One of the first things you might want to consider when decorating your patio or balcony is the type of furniture you want to have around and use. The kind of furniture you want to include on your patio depends on what you want to do with your space.

If you want to entertain and have places to serve summer treats, invest in a nice coffee table or dining table for outdoor eating. If you’d rather read and listen to music with just one pal, put your focus on comfortable chairs.

2. Plants Everywhere

Inside The UNWFPA Awards Luncheon with Fran Drescher, Rosanna Scotto, and more

Ambassador Rosemary DiCarlo, Christian Elliott, The Honorable Joanne King Herring, Vicki Hollub, and Kevin Hyland OBE were honored by UN Women For Peace Association (UNWFPA) at their Annual Awards Luncheon on Tuesday, May 3, 2022 at Casa Cipriani. Rosanna Scotto hosted the celebration, welcoming guests she said, “As a reporter and co-host of FOX 5’s, Good Day New York, I have been lucky enough to be able to use my platform to highlight women’s stories. We have a mission to make sure that women can achieve the equality they deserve. This year’s Awards Luncheon is to celebrate the life and legacy of a strong woman who always fought for equality; UNWFPA Founder, Dame Muna Rihani Al-Nasser.”

UNWFPA President Rema DuPont presented a posthumous Legacy Award for Muna, accepted by her husband and biggest supporter, H.E. Mr. Nassir Abdulaziz Al- Nasser, with their son, Aziz Al-Nasser in the audience. “UN Women for Peace Association will continue to support women and girls with our new Muna Rihani Al-Nasser Scholarship Fund for educating at-risk and underprivileged girls”, shared Rema.

Actress Fran Drescher made the keynote address, sharing her own powerful story, “I became a victim of violence when I was raped at gunpoint in my own home by a man I did not know, who was out on parole. But I was one of the lucky ones, because I lived to identify my assailant and see him sentenced to 150 years in prison. Still, for a year afterwards I felt like a mirror image of myself that was cracked in a thousand pieces. But connecting to one’s trauma, turning pain into purpose, and time are all healing. I am a survivor!”

Rema later announced “Over 94% of violence against women stems from men, which affirms our belief that the solution does too. That is why we are launching a new campaign called Counting On Men — as we believe without addressing men and boys, we will not make progress on the issues related to violence against women and girls.”

The celebration included performances by Wendy Moten, singing Somewhere Over The Rainbow, and country star Drew Baldridge singing his original song She’s Somebody’s Daughter.

Ambassador Rosemary A. DiCarlo received the Leadership Award for her decades of work as a peacekeeper and an advocate for women’s rights. In 2018 DiCarlo became the first woman to assume the position of Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs at the United Nations. DiCarlo has served at the United States Department of State as Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations with the rank and status of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, and represented the United States at the Security Council, General Assembly and other United Nations bodies. Past recipients of this award include First Lady of Panama, Lorena Castillo Garcia de Varela, Deborra-Lee Furness, Secretary-General H.E. Mr. Ban Ki-moon.

The Honorable Joanne King Herring received the Lifetime Achievement Award for her outstanding achievements and years of work to end human trafficking and for helping survivors, which are disproportionately women and children. Herring is a political activist, philanthropist, diplomat, and former television talk show host. While she was born in a world where women had limited choices, she rose to form the most significant alliance that brought an end to the Soviet invasion in Afghanistan and saved America from an economic catastrophe. Long known within the corridors of power in both Afghanistan and Pakistan, Herring’s freedom fighting role in southwest Asia was brought to a wider American audience when the true-life 1980s story of Charlie Wilson’s War was retold in 2007, with Oscar winning actress Julia Roberts playing the remarkable Herring. Past recipients of this award include Eve Branson, Loreen Arbus, and Francine LeFrak.

Kevin Hyland OBE received the Advocacy Award for his remarkable contributions to ending violence against women and girls everywhere. Hyland dedicated over 30 years to public service, including leading London’s Human Trafficking Unit. Hyland was appointed as the UK’s first Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner and was elected as Ireland’s representative to the Council of Europe Independent Group of Experts for Trafficking. He was instrumental in the establishment and remains chief advisor to the Santa Marta Group, a high-level partnership between law enforcement agencies, faith groups and civil society launched by Pope Francis at the Vatican. He leads several international anti trafficking projects chairing the Responsible Recruitment Group of the Institute of Human Rights and Business and the Island of Ireland Human Trafficking Project and provides strategic leadership to the OSCE in producing global victim support guidance.

Vicki Hollub received the Humanitarian Award for her outstanding achievements in rescuing over 500 girls, and their families, by bringing them safely from Afghanistan to Portugal. Hollub was the first woman to head a major American oil company as President and CEO of Occidental Petroleum. She also serves on the boards of Lockheed Martin and the American Petroleum Institute, and is a stewardship board member for the World Economic Forum’s Platform for Shaping the Future of Energy and Material, and a member of the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative. Past recipients of this award include Leyla Ilham Aliyeva, Dayle Haddon, HRH Princess Camilla of Bourbon Two Sicilies, and Paul Bettany.

Christian Elliott received the Media Award for his heroic efforts to end modern-day slavery. Elliot created the global campaign to combat human trafficking, entitled Can you see me?. The campaign reached millions of people, equipping the general public to recognize indicators of human trafficking, and report suspected scenarios. Elliot is Global Development Officer of A21, a nonprofit organization works to end in human trafficking, with offices in 14 countries worldwide.

International Friends of Festival Verdi Spring Gala

The International Friends of Festival Verdi announced their plans for their 22nd season at dinner in a private club and limited to just 180 guests on April 28th.  The evening was curated by chef Massimo Bottura and his team from Osteria Francescana, the three-Michelin-star restaurant based in Modena, known as the hardest reservation to get in the world!

The Mayor of Parma, Federico Pizzarotti, The Scientific Director of Teatro Regio, Francesco Izzo, and Teatro Regio di Parma's General Director, Anna Maria Meo, and the president of the International Friends of Festival Verdi, James E. Miller and executive director Silvia Frieser, announced the program for the coming season (September 22 through October 16th) and the beauty of, “seeing Verdi in the land of Verdi, to live where he lived, performed in theaters where he worked, with the sound as he knew it, having the food and wine he knew grown in his own terroir.”  This is the unique proposition of Festival Verdi.  In 2022 the performances include three staged operas La Forza del Destino, Il Trovatore, and Simon Boccanegra each based on a contemporary Spanish play that Verdi admired.  These seminal works were brought to his attention through the talented actress Margherita Barezzi, his then mistress and later his second wife, who spoke fluent Spanish.  This is a unique chance to consider these works side by side.

The menu was presented in an emotional speech by Massimo Bottura who took great pains to explain the dishes, their preparation, and what they represented to him – an edible autobiography.  The spectacular hors d’oeuvre and five course meal, made with ingredients of the region and paired with its wines, provided topics of conversation making the room instantly one.  Courses included “Beautiful, Psychedelic Spin Painted Veal”, which was a tribute to Damien Hirst and a deconstructed “Crunchy Part of the Lasagna,” a tribute to the chef’s mother.

The evening also offered superb music by soprano Eleonora Buratto performing Verdi’s tragic aria, Morrò, ma prima in grazia from Un Ballo in Maschera followed by Un bel di from Madam Butterfly ---the role she is currently performing at The Met.  It brought tears to many eyes.

The evening’s guest of honor was conductor Ricardo Frizza who has been thrilling audiences with The Met’s Lucia di Lammermoor.  Other guests included Bill Buford and Jessica Green, Francois Payard, Ruth Reichl, Barbara Tober, and Laurent Tourondel.
