The Athenians captivated over 60 guests at Alice Kandell’s Upper East Side penthouse with a performance in celebration of her birthday. From her Steinway grand piano Athenian’s director Dr. Michael Fennelly, led 19 soloists (including the soprano and co-director of the Athenians, Megan Weston) in renditions of great opera arias. NYC Construction Sites Hit With Surprise Inspections

Recently, thousands of construction sites across New York City have been hit with a series of surprise inspections. Officials claim that this sudden crackdown is designed to promote accountability and safety within the notoriously dangerous construction industry in NYC. As of writing, more than 11,000 violations have been documented, with the number only continuing to grow. Urgent care centers in the U.S. clock about three visits per hour, with more than 50 per day, many of which are injuries common on construction sites. The trouble is, in NYC, these sites have apparently been becoming increasingly dangerous. Inspections are likely to continue for the foreseeable future as a preventive measure to protect construction workers.

Construction industry dangers continue

Historically, the construction industry has been successful yet dangerous. As it stands, the construction equipment industry is expected to grow 12% from 2016 to 2026. This growth, unfortunately, comes at a cost - many construction sites frequently fail to meet regulatory safety standards that are put in place both for the protection of workers and those in future buildings. As a result, injuries have become commonplace in the industry. Approximately 31 million injuries that require medical attention occur every year in the United States. Construction injuries in New York City alone soared by 61% to reach 761 last year. Meanwhile, the number of construction fatalities on the job has remained constant over the past twelve years. There may be more than 6,200 hospitals around the country, but they’d like to see fewer injuries. As would people working in construction. Thus, accountability is essential.

Ongoing inspections increase oversight

In response to the growing number of injuries, New York City is increasing the rate at which it conducts inspections of ongoing construction. According to one poll, only two in 10 workers believe their managers are encouraging them to do their best work. Polls like that raise alarms and shoddy work bring inspections, especially in the construction industry. While previously inspections were only conducted upon request for scheduled visits or in response to complaints, random inspections are now revealing more gross neglect of regulations. So far, more than 11,000 violations have been documented on construction sites, with the number only growing as more inspections are conducted. In addition to the 11,000 violations, more than 2,000 construction sites have been fully shut down at least temporarily until adjustments have been made to guarantee worker safety. This is one of the first continued proactive protection measures the city has conducted for construction sites in recent decades and is also one of the most widespread.

Preventing future injuries and damage

With the proactive inspections continuing, officials say the results look promising. As more violations are caught and documented, more workers will be protected from future injury while on the job. Additionally, the changing precedent means more construction sites are likely to be consistently safe; with surprise inspections, consistently following regulations becomes more important. Ideally, the frequent inspections of construction sites will have a positive impact on working conditions for construction workers, though the long-term results remain to be seen.

The world-renowned designers who have designed unsurpassed interiors; Jean-Louis Deniot designed the residential interiors and amenities, Pierre-Yves Rochon was the mind behind the hotel interiors and legacy public spaces, and famed art collector and auctioneer Simon de Pury curated the art collection for the residents of the Towers. Also, with 375 condominiums in the Towers atop the 375-key newly-constructed Waldorf Astoria New York hotel, residents will have over 50,000 square feet of private residential amenities, as well as access to the hotel’s more than 100,000 square feet of amenities.

Inside The Kamen Brain Tumor Gala

200 donors joined Dr. Mazen Kamen to hear of advancements in pediatric brain tumor research. "Brain cancer has surpassed leukemia as the number one cause of cancer deaths among children”, shared Dr. Kamen, “It’s a devastating disease that affects both children and adults across racial and socioeconomic divides. More than 28,000 children are living with a brain tumor in the United States and an estimated 4,000 new cases of childhood brain tumors are expected to be diagnosed this year. "

The evening's host, CNBC senior editor Barbara Booth, greeted guests saying, "It's a very special night and I'm beyond honored to be here. As an investigative reporter for CNBC I have been reporting on cutting edge treatments for illnesses and injuries along with meeting the amazing doctors behind these revolutionary breakthroughs. Every one of you in this room brings this foundation to life and I thank you for that." CNBC's Sharon Epperson added, "Right now for children ages 0 to 14, glioma central nervous system tumors are the leading cause of cancer-related deaths, discovering new treatments for these tumors will take much funding and research. It's going to take a village for this, and we have one right here. I applaud this Foundation and all of you here tonight for making this important commitment to find a cure." Keynote speaker Dr. Herbert Pardes reinforced the need for research, "We’re seeking a quality survival. A cure, of course, it's what we want.  Research funded by this foundation is helping us slowly move in that direction." 

The Athenians

The evening was enlivened by a stellar performance by The Athenians, an ensemble of exceptional professional soloists from the Metropolitan Opera and other leading opera companies who performed classic arias while mixing among the dinner tables.

Most of us look at work clothes as nothing but that. Just business attire. This is why often times we don't pay too much attention to make it look as nice as our other outfits. However, you should invest some time, money, and creativity in your work clothes, and here is how you can update it easily.

Not modern enough

In the era of fast-changing fashion trends, it is hard to keep up and be modern at all times, especially when it comes to working clothes, which we don't buy that often. However, you will look modern in your business attire by investing in a tailored suit for example. The benefits are that it will be done just by your measures, which automaticity makes it a perfect fit, and an elegant piece. Another way to do it is to invest in quality shoes, purses, and accesories, which will complete every outfit. Choose more subtle pieces like pearl or stud earrings, or pendant necklaces, because they are appropriate and also very fashionable.

Not your style

A good way to make your work clothes more interesting and update it easily is to make it fit your personal style. This means that you can use the trends you love and incorporate them into those formal outfits. Pleated skirts are very trendy, and they can be a great piece for the office, paired with a turtleneck and a statement belt. If you don't like to wear heels, subtle ankle boots will do the trick. Oversized trend is something we all love, especially because it's so comfortable, so why not get a sweater like that with some dark wash high waisted jeans, and heels, and make it look professional, yet casual enough.

You don’t wear dresses

Whenever you hear business clothes, your mind probably goes to pencil skirts, pants, and blazers, which are a great option. However, another practical and classy solution are dresses. Work clothes can be formal, business casual, or casual. If you need to look classy and professional at all times, make sure you have pantsuits, pencil skirts, and shirts in your wardrobe. Quality shoes are also a must, together with a purse, you will be able to put all your necessities in. For business casual, blouses, dresses, jeans, and loose pants are an option, as well as ankle boots, flats, or oxford shoes. If your work allows casual clothing, just make sure you don't wear too revealing and tight pieces, otherwise everything works, even trainers, jumpsuits, jeans, t-shirts, and sweaters.

Another good advice to make it look fashionable is to mix fabrics, like silk with sweaters, denim with cotton, and wool with leather. Animal prints can be a bit tricky, but start with details like silk scarves, purses, or shoes, and when you feel a bit more comfortable, combine animal print skirts with turtlenecks, sweaters, blazers, and leather jackets.

Work clothes can often be different than what we would normally wear. This is why it is important to incorporate some of your styles in it, play with designs, prints and patterns, and experiment until you find what works best for you.
