Tips for Updating Your Home’s Exterior

Tips for Updating Your Home’s Exterior

September 21, 2020 by Jeremy Lindy in Real Estate

The exterior of your house shapes a first impression on every visitor. Whether you’re looking to upgrade your home before selling it or wanting to spruce up your house and add value, working on the outside is a great place to start. Here are some quick tips for updating your home’s exterior.

New Paint

One of the main features of your house is its color. Regardless of the building materials of your home, several areas require paint. Putting a new coat of paint on your brick, siding, shutters, or doors can make a big difference. If you love the color you already have, try adding a fresh coat to make it look extra-clean and new. If you want to spice things up with a different color, be sure to use a paint primer to allow the new coat to stick and to keep the previous coat from peeking through.

More Light

Exterior lighting is a great way to accent various features of your house and ensure it looks beautiful, even at night. Lighting can be helpful for nighttime visitors and for ensuring safety, and outside light fixtures also enhance the overall appearance of your home. Look for places that aren’t well-lit, and consider the best way to show them off. Also, look for aspects of your home you want to accent—adding subtle lighting can really make a special feature pop. Updating your lighting can go a long way towards adding aesthetic beauty and value to your home.

Quality Landscaping

Landscaping is like the bridge between your house and your property—it’s the manicured feature that adds natural beauty to your home’s appearance. Consider investing in some new flowers or trees that will bloom in various seasons, allowing your home to look lovely year-round. When potential homebuyers come to check out your house, the landscaping is one of the things they’ll pay special attention to. Try extending your flower garden or adding some stonework. The more nice touches you add, the more appealing your house will appear at first glance.

Routine Maintenance

It’s no one’s favorite job, but regularly keeping up with the cracks, leaks, and smaller projects will keep your house in top condition. For example, consider choosing new gutters and upgrading their style. Scrutinize your siding to look for any cracks, and fill them with caulk. Power-washing your driveway and exterior walls can be hard work, but the final product is a home without years of dirt buildup. If you keep up with routine maintenance and perform these larger tasks periodically, you’ll surprise yourself at how good your home looks as the years pass.

Your house is an investment, and these tips for updating your home’s exterior are just a few of the many upgrade options. Work through these projects, and then plan more. You never know when you’ll be looking to sell your home, and you want to be ready when you do.
