What Is The Secret For A Good Belmont Jewel Cocktail?

July 04, 2023 by Jeremy Lindy

Wrapped in the allure of equestrianism and the exhilarating world of horse racing, the Belmont Jewel cocktail stands as a timeless tribute to the Belmont Stakes, the thrilling third jewel of the legendary Triple Crown.

In this delightful libation, flavors mingle, dance, and harmonize to create an experience that is as smooth as a champion's stride and as enchanting as the rush of the home stretch.

But what’s the secret behind this refreshing goodness?

This cocktail can be found at horse race places, such as Churchill Downs and Del Mar race tracks. Come with us to unravel the secrets to preparing the perfect Belmont Jewel cocktail. It’s a tantalizing concoction that strikes the perfect balance between sophistication and laid-back charm.

Belmont Jewel Cocktail Preparation Process

Ingredients

The first step in crafting the ultimate Belmont Jewel lies in selecting the finest ingredients (even though they are not that hard to get) that will create a symphony of flavors. Here's what you'll need:

2 ounces of bourbon: Choose a bourbon that speaks to your palate, one that boasts notes of caramel, vanilla, and a hint of oak, as if aged in the stables of Belmont Park itself.

1 ounce of pomegranate juice: The pomegranate juice adds a touch of tangy sweetness, reminiscent of the excitement that courses through the air as the horses thunder down the track.

1/2 ounce of lemon juice: A sprightly splash of lemon juice brings a zesty freshness to the blend, akin to the cheers of the jubilant crowd. After all, the Belmont Stakes is in the summer and we need something refreshing.

Lemon peel for garnish: A final flourish of citrus zest adds a visual flair, elevating the presentation to a level fit for a winner's circle.

How to Prepare the Belmont Jewel Cocktail

The preparation process for the Belmont Jewel cocktail is actually very simple once you’ve gathered all the ingredients.

Step 1: Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. This is the starting gate, where the magic begins.

Step 2: Add the bourbon, pomegranate juice, and lemon juice, to the shaker. Each ingredient takes its place in this spirited ballet, ready to pirouette together.

Step 3: Shake vigorously, with the grace and precision of a jockey guiding their mount. This step is crucial—your efforts will ensure the flavors gallop together harmoniously.

Step 4: Strain the refreshing cocktail into a rocks glass, filled with ice. Like a thoroughbred crossing the finish line, the cocktail is poised for its final presentation.

Step 5: The mixture is now ready and it is in your hands to make the cocktail look more presentable. Traditionally, the Belmont Jewel cocktail is garnished with lemon zest on top or a slice of lemon on the side of the glass.

However, the rules here are not as strict as the dress code at the Belmont Stakes. You garnish it how you want. Some people choose to include mint leaves on top and some add a lemon slice and cherry.

Once you are done, take a moment to admire the cocktail's ruby hue, reminiscent of the winner's blanket draped over the triumphant steed.

Now, take a sip and enjoy the perfect blend of sweetness and tartness as you enjoy the race.

Final Words

In the world of cocktail craftsmanship, the Belmont Jewel stands as a true champion—a libation that captures the essence of the Belmont Stakes and the exhilaration that defines horse racing.

With its rich flavors, delicate balance, and simplicity, the Belmont Jewel cocktail offers a sip of incredibly refreshing flavors, and plus it is easy to make a refill for your friends and not miss the entire race.

So, gather your friends, raise your glasses, and embark on a journey of taste and celebration, for with the perfect blend of ingredients, the Belmont Jewel will always reign supreme as the champion of cocktails.
