Helpful Tips For Your First Apartment Makeover

March 07, 2022 by Jeremy Lindy

One can argue that Canada is a great place for immigrants seeking permanent residency. With its bustling culture and exceptional assets ranging from healthcare access, employment ventures, local landscapes, and more, you’ll definitely be guaranteed a unique and thriving way of life should you decide to pursue a residency in the country.

Once you’ve successfully submitted the requirements needed for the Canadian immigration process, you’re now ready to begin the next chapter of your new life. Of course, what better way to start than finding a property and decorating your first-ever apartment?

This article will provide helpful tips you can consider when having your first apartment makeover. Unless you’re lucky enough to move into a well-equipped apartment, you have to ensure that your space is not only pleasing to look at but also safe. Remember to opt for an apartment or residence suitable for living, as this will significantly help prevent any possible disrepair claims in the future.

From different aesthetics, styles, and more, feel free to personalize each recommendation however you want in a way that fits your preferences the most.

1. Select the right furniture

While it’s our inherent dream to opt for huge yet cozy sectionals for future homes, bringing this mindset into your first apartment may only result in a cluttered and chaotic space. Big furniture pieces, for instance, won’t be able to fit into your room. On the other hand, furniture that is too small may also disrupt the overall balance of the room, giving it a rather amateurish and bland look.

2. Find the perfect blend of aesthetic and functionality

Apart from considering the appropriate size of the furniture, it’s also important to select dual-purpose items that not only serve one purpose. At most, you should pick furniture that can both be functional and aesthetic at the same time so you can maximize your space efficiently. Storage benches and ottomans are a considerable choice for this, especially if you’re short on either shelf or closet space. These are efficient for when you want to store your towels, books, or blankets, all while presenting them as an extra space for seating when your guests come over.

3. Resist the temptation of freebies

Your friends or family may be supportive of your new apartment and may bombard you with free items such as hand-me-downs. While accepting these offers may be tempting, it’s still important to be picky about which ones to get. Your space should first and foremost be a reflection of your personality since it’s what will welcome you every time you get home from a long day.

However, if you really have no choice but to accept your relative’s old sofa, you can put a fresh spin on it by purchasing new yet affordable throws or pillows that can give a new look to the item. A new coat of paint is also a good idea since it helps other key furniture pieces such as coffee tables or bookshelves feel brand new. Accentuate these with flower vases or small decoration items to add to the room’s appeal.

4. Going green is the way to go

Filling up your apartment with greenery — real or faux — can provide life into your first ever apartment, regardless of your preferred style or your budget. To do this, you can always opt to place potted plants in bar carts, shelves or even hang them from your ceiling for additional texture everywhere. Moreover, gazing into greenery every waking day is good for your eyes and will help exude the vibe of a natural atmosphere within your space.

5. Opt for removable wallpaper

Most rental apartments don’t encourage painting your walls. However, one creative way you can still do so nonetheless is by going for removable wallpaper. Not only does it make for an affordable option, but it also helps you show off your personal and unique style. It also makes it easy to switch aesthetics or styles by going for other removable wallpaper options whenever you feel like renovating your space.

6. Display art

Your first apartment isn’t the most appropriate place where you can go all-out on extravagance. Instead, you can choose unique decorations or art such as framed photos of your travels, family, or friends and hang them on the wall. You can also display your accolades or diploma on your shelves or anywhere you want.

These simple accents function well enough as decoration and are also affordable at the same time. This allows you to set aside your funds for more important money matters and purchases.
