Dragon Fest Team Debuts One-Day Eggcellent Fest in Washington Square

The team behind Dragon Fest, New York City’s largest Chinese food festival, is trading dumplings for a different kind of comfort food this month. On August 8, the group will take over Washington Square North for Eggcellent Fest, a free, one-day-only celebration built entirely around eggs, which organizers are billing as the first festival of its kind in New York City.

The lineup spans more than 50 egg-forward dishes pulled from around the globe, including fluffy French-style souffles, North African shakshuka, Japanese omurice, classic eggs Benedict and Hong Kong-style egg waffles. Vendors will keep the theme going well past the plate, too: organizers are planning a 15-foot inflatable egg, costumed egg mascots, themed photo backdrops and festival-exclusive merchandise for anyone looking to commemorate the occasion.

Eggcellent Fest is the latest project from Dragon Fest founder BiuBiu Xu, who has built a following on the New York festival circuit with oversized, highly photogenic events built around a single ingredient or cuisine. With admission free and the festival running for just one day, organizers are counting on New Yorkers’ appetite for a novel food holiday to draw a crowd to Washington Square Park on August 8.
