6 Important Things To Know Before Building An Outdoor Kitchen

February 19, 2022 by Jeremy Lindy

It seems like, over the past couple of years, more and more homeowners have decided to renovate, or in a way upgrade their houses. What's interesting is the fact that a lot of them turn to outdoor kitchens.

It’s like they are blown away by them and who could blame them since these kitchens give you the same joy as the indoor ones, yet allow you to enjoy the beautiful outdoors while you are having your favorite meal.

Who wouldn’t love to have that? Now, if you’re considering expanding your space by building the outdoor kitchen, then that’s a great idea, but before you make any further steps, then make sure to read these useful facts first.

Useful Facts To Know About An Outdoor Kitche

Location, Location, Location

This must be carefully thought through before making any other decisions. So if you’re one hundred percent sure that you want to have an outdoor kitchen, then you should set it in a location that enables you to comfortably take foods and drinks to and from the indoor kitchen.

Additionally, you should also consider the configuration and distance of the kitchen. Ask yourself will you be able to move hot plates normally without burning your hands, or not? Bear in mind that it’s also important to have a clear path between the outdoor kitchen and indoor kitchen to avoid any obstructions that can make things difficult while you are serving.

Everything Starts With The Frame

Remember that one cannot build an outdoor kitchen without having the frame first. Now, if you’re not too sure what’s the purpose of it here you will find all the facts you need to know that will further explain some things. Moreover, before you determine the type of structure you want to have, consider the endurance of the materials first, the tools you’ll be needing and of course the overall cost you’ll be having for the frame. These are the most common types of frame:

  • Wood Frame

  • Brick Frame

  • Steel Frame

Anything Else That Must Be Mentioned?

It’s A Better Option Than To Upgrade Current Kitchen

Now, a lot of people think that building an outdoor kitchen is going to destroy their budget, however, that’s far from the truth. In fact, it would actually be like updating your current indoor kitchen but at a much cheaper cost.

Plus, you'll be having an additional space outside where you'll be able to prepare delicious foods and gather all the people you love. When people renovate their indoor kitchen, they usually spend up to $100,000, while you can get a functional and practical outdoor kitchen for no more than $10,000. That's quite a difference!

See Whether You Need Any Permits Or Not

This is one of the most frequently asked questions when it comes to the outdoor kitchen. It's all because a lot of homeowners are not too sure whether they need any permits or not. The answer is – it depends.

For instance, if you’re not planning to add a roof, plus you do not want to have any plumbing or electrical work, then it’s highly likely you won’t be needing any permit. On the other hand, if you plan any of these things, then you will probably need one. Moreover, do not forget state and local requirements regarding fireplaces and framing grills.

Style Matters As Well!

If you want to have an outdoor kitchen that will perfectly match your house’s exterior, then you have to be very careful when choosing a style. So what are the most common outdoor kitchen styles?

  1. Contemporary – This one focuses on polished surfaces and clean lines and oftentimes employs granite countertops, as well as stainless steel appliances in order to accomplish a sleek appearance.

  2. Rustic – In this case, earthly colors, stone materials, stucco, and distressed wood are most frequently utilized.

  3. Traditional – People are usually inspired by the 18th and 19th centuries when designing a traditional outdoor kitchen, so they normally use stone, brick, and stucco while accentuating symmetry and simplicity.

Serving, Cooking, Cleaning

If you want to make sure you've created a perfect kitchen area, then you must obtain all the essentials. This means that you should have designated areas where you can prep and cook your foods, serve them, and after a meal, clean the dishes. If you plan these things out up front, you are going to make things a lot simpler.

Most of us have concluded so far that having an outdoor kitchen is certainly very thrilling and wonderful. But still, before you launch into this project, make sure to first carefully read everything that's been stated here so you make no mistakes.
