The Whisky That Got Mistaken for a Weapon of Mass Destruction Is Back
Leave it to Bruichladdich to take one of the great bureaucratic blunders of the early 2000s — when US Military Intelligence somehow flagged a sleepy Islay distillery as a potential weapons-of-mass-destruction site — and turn it into one of Scotch's most beloved inside jokes. The progressive Hebridean distillery answered the mix-up with humor rather than outrage, and the cheekily named "Whisky of Mass Distinction" series was born. Now, to mark 25 years since its scrappy 2001 resurrection, Bruichladdich is reviving its cult-favorite Yellow Submarine III — the third outing in the saga, following the 2005 original and 2018's The Legend Resurfaces. And yes, there's still an actual replica submarine parked proudly in the distillery grounds, a nod to the wayward Ministry of Defence sub discovered off Islay's coast back in 2005.
Behind the playful backstory is a seriously lovely dram. This is an unpeated 14-year-old single malt made from 100% Scottish barley, matured entirely on Islay in a carefully balanced recipe of first-fill bourbon barrels (75%) and first- and second-fill French red wine casks (25%). It's bottled un-chill-filtered at a generous 54.2% ABV with no added color, curated by Master Blender Adam Hannett to echo the spirit of that original 2005 release. The bourbon oak brings vanilla, honeyed sweetness and texture, while the French red wine casks layer in nutty spice, fruit and structure around Bruichladdich's elegant, floral house style.
So what's actually in the glass? Expect honeyed oats and buttery shortbread on the nose, giving way to toasted hazelnut, nutmeg and a gentle ginger heat, then a palate of orange zest, honeysuckle, crisp apple and pear, crème brûlée richness and that signature whisper of Islay sea salt. Hannett calls it a whisky that "makes you smile as soon as you nose it" — playful, layered and moreish, exactly what a Yellow Submarine bottling should be. It's a reminder that great whisky can be refined in the glass without taking itself too seriously. Priced at $134.99, Yellow Submarine III surfaces in June 2026 via us.bruichladdich.com and select specialist whisky retailers nationwide. Dive in.
