Sean Wotherspoon Designs a Collectible Label for Silver Oak
Silver Oak has tapped designer, vintage collector, and creative director Sean Wotherspoon for a limited-edition collaboration marking a first in the winery’s history. Created to celebrate the release of the 2022 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, the 480-bottle edition reimagines Silver Oak’s signature label and stands as the first artist-designed bottle since the winery’s founding more than 50 years ago. The collaboration brings together two vintage-minded sensibilities: a designer known for finding new relevance in the past, and a historic California winery whose Cabernet has long been made to improve with time.
Named Joyful Kaleidoscope, Wotherspoon’s artwork reinterprets Silver Oak’s familiar label architecture, anchored by the winery’s iconic water tower and oak tree, through bold color blocking and graphic forms that reflect his signature style. Silver Oak Chief Marketing Officer Lauren Larrabee said the label has remained consistent over the years because it is part of the brand’s identity, and that inviting Wotherspoon to reinterpret it was about seeing that identity through a new creative lens. Wotherspoon, who has built his career revisiting familiar silhouettes and cultural references, said the project was inspired by the sensory depth of nature, from scent to texture to color, a journey he wanted to translate into the label’s design.
The limited-edition bottle will be available beginning August 31 exclusively on silveroak.com while supplies last. Founded in 1972, Silver Oak has spent more than five decades crafting Cabernet Sauvignon aged in American oak, with wineries in Napa Valley and Alexander Valley that were among the first production wineries to achieve LEED Platinum certification. Wotherspoon, based in Los Angeles, is a designer, curator, and vintage enthusiast who founded the vintage shop Round Two at age 23 and has since collaborated with a wide range of brands across sneakers, clothing, and cars. Since January 2025, he has also served as Gap’s Global Vintage Curator, further cementing his role as one of the most sought-after voices in vintage design.
