Carrera Sunglasses: Get the Shape Right

October 28, 2021 by Jeremy Lindy

Carrera Sunglasses: Get the Shape Right

On the global level Carrera eyewear is known and beloved for its bold and retro frames. The style of the brand and its origin came from Austria’s Wilhelm Anger in 1956, he had been inspired by automotive racing. The designs were made to thrill, similarly to how racing at that time captivated audiences and Carrera’s creator. The brand today offers cool and calm energy, similar to the demeanor of a driver hitting top speeds in a roadster.

Carrera is famous for many of its product lines and collaborations, however, its most popular and recognized shape is its pilot frame. Carrera sunglasses are known for using lightweight plastics across its eyewear brand. With a background in plastics, Anger was able to develop and patent a pioneering material called Optyl®, still heavily used today across the eyewear market seen in your favorite luxury and premium brands. The material is 20% lighter than most plastics used for eyewear and frames made of this material have a unique ability to mold and adapt to the face of the wearer. The ubiquity of the material and the shape of their most popular frame set the stage for Carrera as a gamechanger for the market.

Their innovation allowed the Carrera name to climb to the top of the sports world. In the 70s they were popular for their partnership with Porsche and sportswear launches. They developed a line of ski goggles that are still in high demand today. The goggles were lightweight and sought after by amateur and Olympic athletes alike. Carrera goggles started to pop up across the globe and in a few winter games. The magic behind the brand is their ability to be technologically advanced and highly stylish with their modern and futuristic designs

Back to the pilot shape frames. The brand owes much of its history and notoriety to these frames, the finishes on them of course resemble Carrera. Exuding retro-cool and bringing up that historical love of sport, all maintaining a push for modern design and ingenuity. These frames have been everywhere and on everyone, you can spot these frames on famous faces around the globe, not just on your most loved athletes. More recently Carrera has been taken up into the portfolio of Salfio, an optical distributor based in Italy. The brand is well cared for under this steward.

Pilot sunglasses got their start in aviation, pilots needed a way to improve their sight and block glare during bright trips. The shape remains very popular today due to its flattering shaping, it looks great on most faces. Carrera of course had their take on the style, adding red and black then adding their now-famous lens gradient. The collection is available on SmartBuyGlasses, where you can easily shop Carrera sunglasses and find what you love!
