Best time to travel to Italy: recommendations to know when to visit Italy

December 02, 2022 by Jeremy Lindy

Once we embark on a trip to Italy, several questions arise: when is it convenient to visit this beautiful country, is it better to travel to Italy in summer or in winter, is it suitable to undertake this adventure in May, July, or September? Of course, these are some of the typical questions we ask ourselves when planning a trip to Italian Dolomites. Knowing when is the best month to travel there could totally change your trip and help to save on vacation rentals if you choose a low season.

If you like to be surrounded by a lot of people, heat and so on, you can choose to visit Italy in the high season - in the months of June to September - but you should keep in mind that you will find a lot of tourists and travelers. Besides, the cost of products and services is high during most of the season. To fully experience what Italy can offer and to communicate with both locals and tourists, you can start learning Italian and the best way to do that is with The Intrepid Guide. Your Italy trip will surely be your highlight of the season.

On the other hand, if you are a lover of the peace and quiet of Italy with its more relaxed activities and prefer to avoid the crowds, traveling from October onwards, when the high season begins to decline, being able to visit the best places more freely and at better prices is a convenient option. Also, for the winter months like December or January, you will be able to go to the northern tourist places to practice snow sports.

In our opinion, the best months to visit Italy are April/May and October/November, since temperatures in those months are not extreme, the weather is stable and there are not many people in the tourist sites. However, these months are not ideal for winter sports (the season is between December and March) or for the beach (the season is from June to September). Anyway, one of the key elements of a pleasant vacation - is a properly chosen place to stay. On Karta.com you can find a variety of affordable and cozy rentals anywhere.

Travel in October/November to Italy

From October the temperatures start to drop noticeably. Autumn begins in Italy, which is why during this month the cold begins to be felt (especially at night). But during the day the weather is pleasant, the sun is still out and that is why we believe that October can be considered as a very good option to visit Italy. In general, temperatures are between 10 and 18 degrees Celsius depending on the area. Always considering that the north is colder. October is also a month rich in festivals, especially in small towns. Therefore, at that time there is a great variety of gastronomic festivals, especially those related to chestnuts, chocolates, mushrooms, and truffles. Among all of them, the famous Grape Harvest and the Slow Food Great International Food Event stand out, as well as World Pasta Day, every fourth Sunday of October. We recommend, then, bringing light clothes and a jacket to cover up at night or in the early morning. In Italy, they say "vestirse a cipolla" (dress like an onion: in layers).

Traveling in Italy in April/May

In our opinion, these months are one of the best months to travel in Italy as they belong to the spring season of the country. In addition, flowers start to grow and tourists go for a walk in the streets without hesitation. On the other hand, the northern parts of Italy still have cooler climates compared to central and southern Italy.
