7 Things To Consider When Moving To Another State

July 23, 2022 by Jeremy Lindy

Thinking of moving to another state? Whether you’re moving to a neighbouring state or crossing the entire country, there are a few preparations you’ll need to make and differences that you’ll need to be aware of. Below are some of the big things to consider before moving out of state.

The cost of living

It’s important that you can afford to live in another state. The likes of New York, California and Hawaii are known for their notoriously high cost of living - moving to one of these states from a cheaper location may require downsizing or having to earn more to get by. Other states like Mississippi, Kansas and Oklahoma have a relatively low cost of living. Moving here from a more expensive state could be a means of getting you more for your money.

Moving costs

On top of the cost of living, you also have to consider the cost of moving. The further away you move, the higher the cost will be to travel there and relocate your possessions. If you’ve got lots of possessions, you may have no choice but to hire a moving company. This needs to be a company that specializes in cross country moving. It could be worth getting a quote to see how affordable it is likely to be.

Local opportunities

Does the state you’re moving to have the job opportunities you’re looking for? When it comes to leisure activities, is there a lot to do that suits your interests? These are very important things to consider before moving to another state. Most people move to another state to pursue job opportunities, while others may look to pursue hobbies like sports or the arts.

Cultural differences

The US may be one country, but the culture within it is incredibly varied. In certain states, you’ll find that people gravitate to different foods, different music and different sports. Some states may value traditions, while others may be a lot more progressive in their views. Accents and even vocabulary may change between states too. Make sure that you understand the culture and that you are happy to embrace any differences.

Climate

Some people prefer hotter states, while others prefer cooler states. Consider what is your personal preference. It could also be worth considering the risk of natural disasters such as earthquakes, tornadoes and hurricanes. Those who have been a victim of certain natural disasters may be eager to get away from such disasters.

State laws

Different states also have their own laws. What may be perfectly legal in one state, may be illegal in another. Make sure that legal restrictions do not negatively affect your choices or lifestyle.

Time zone

Some states operate in a completely different time zone. This is something you can easily adjust to in most cases, but you may want to take it into account if you work a set hour job remotely (can you really start your work 4 hours earlier?) or if you need to keep communication back home.
