A Guide To Avoiding Self-Medication

Self-medication is a scenario in which a person uses a substance in order to try and cope with a physical or mental health condition without the assistance of a medical professional. In some cases, self-medication can be relatively unconcerning: taking over-the-counter pain medications to reduce a headache, for example, can be considered self-medication.

When is self-medication a problem?

However, while self-medication can be harmless, it does have a darker side. This usually involves a scenario in which a person is using substances to mask an underlying condition that they do not wish to address in full. In these scenarios, there is a risk that self-medication can become an addiction to the chosen substance; this may be to alcohol or illicit substances such as heroin, which you can learn more about the risks of by reading through infographic below. 

Which should self-medication be avoided? 

Firstly, self-medication is not safe, especially if illicit substances are involved. Secondly, self-medicating actually worsens the situation by adding a secondary issue - such as addiction - to the underlying problem: it makes things worse, not better. 

How can self-medication be avoided? 

• Address physical or mental health issues head-on. If you are experiencing any kind of health concern, talk to a medical professional as soon as possible. Doing so helps to ensure that any underlying issues always receive the focus they need, rather than being allowed to spiral

• Identify emotional triggers. Most people who self-medicate will do so in response to “bad” emotions, such as stress or anxiety. 

Build safe response mechanisms. When you have identified your potential emotional triggers, you can build safe responses to these emotions. For example, you could go for a walk or call a friend for a chat - anything that avoids the use of any kind of substance or medication, and that you find enjoyable or relaxing, will suffice.

The Rose HIll neighborhood has a new building as Hillrose28, has topped out with interiors designed by Andres Escobar. The building is located at 181 East 28th Street near the corner of Third Avenue.

Forkosh Development are developing Hillrose28, a contemporary condominium tower with elegant architecture rising in the Rose Hill area of Manhattan. Forkosh Development has a 25-year history of working with world-renowned architects, designers, and artists to create residential developments that are true urban landmarks.

Hillrose28 will consist of 43 luxury condominium residences, ranging from one- to - three bedrooms, all with gracious layouts, and a curated collection of best-in-class amenities.
