Hidden Costs of Owning a Home to Budget For

July 16, 2020 by Jeremy Lindy

Your mortgage payment isn’t the only cost you’ll have to budget for when you buy a home. Homeowners often forget to consider several additional costs when trying to determine how expensive of a house they can afford. To avoid some unpleasant surprises on your monthly bills after closing a deal on a house, read up on some of these hidden costs of owning a home to budget for before making a purchase.

Utility bills

One of the largest hidden costs of owning a home are utility bills—electricity, water, garbage, and natural gas aren’t cheap. On average, most homeowners spend around $200 on utility payments each month, which amounts to over $2,000 each year. However, the cost of your utility payments will depend on several factors, such as the size of your home and how much energy you use. People who make an effort to lower their utility bills by properly insulating their home and using energy-efficient appliances will likely enjoy smaller payments. You can also look at things like no deposit lights, this is a way to prepay for electricity so you know exactly what you are paying out that month. It is a cheap way to pay for your electricity and will be a lot easier to budget as you will be paying beforehand with no deposit or credit check needed. With everyday life becoming more and more expensive it’s important to make sure you look at as much cost of living information as possible.

Property taxes

Another substantial hidden cost of owning a home to budget for is property taxes. Property taxes vary widely depending on the neighborhood in which a home is located and the value of that home. Before purchasing a house, make sure to look into how much the property taxes will be and to factor them into your budget. In addition, you should leave some extra room in your budget for potential property tax increases that may occur in the coming years.

Home maintenance

Once you own a home, you’re responsible for anything that goes wrong on your property. If your air conditioning breaks or there’s a leak, you won’t be able to just call up your landlord and have them fix it. You’ll be the one who has to shoulder the bill. As such, it’s important to budget a decent chunk of money for any home maintenance issues that may arise.

Homeowners’ insurance

Yet another hidden cost of home ownership is homeowners’ insurance. Like many costs associated with homeownership, homeowners’ insurance will vary depending on the state and city in which the house is located as well as the insurance provider and how much coverage you want. According to Zillow, homeowners in the U.S. will pay around $35 a month on average for every $100,000 of home value.
