What To Know About Crate Shipping

January 14, 2024 by Jeremy Lindy

Sometimes, a box just isn’t good enough. Whether it’s a fragile item or a heavier piece you don’t want to get scratched during shipping, a box isn’t always the best solution. Yes, a box will hold your items, but it can’t provide a lot of protection. This is when a crate comes in. But what about the shipping process? Is it different than with a standard box? To make navigating the complicated crate shipping process a little easier, here’s what you should know.

Tips for Shipping with a Crate

Choose the Right Crate

Crates aren’t created equal. You can find crates in various sizes ranging from small enough for a microwave to big enough to store an SUV. Even the material can vary, but most are made from wood. Chances are, this is going to be the best option for you.

Not only are wood crates widely available, but they’re also relatively budget-friendly. From the purchasing cost to shipping expense, wood crates are often the way to go.

When it comes to choosing the crate size, don’t go too small or large. You want the item to fit easily inside but don’t want enough room for it to slide around. Try to find a crate that’s only a few inches larger than the item you’re shipping.

Protect Your Items

Even if the item isn’t breakable, you still don’t want it bumping up against the sides of the crate. Suddenly, you’re dealing with scratches and possibly dents. To ensure your item arrives in the same condition, use some padding. This can be anything from bubble wrap to packing peanuts or even old sheets and blankets.

Using your old bedding is free and will effectively protect your items. Packing peanuts may not be the best option. Yes, a bag of Styrofoam peanuts is inexpensive, but they’re also terrible for the environment. The same is also true for bubble wrap, but it can be a good option if you can’t find any old bedding.

Most shipping stores sell different types of cushioning material. Some even sell or rent shipping blankets. Renting the blankets is affordable and eco-friendly.

Secure Your Belongings

Sometimes, using protective padding isn’t enough to protect fragile items. If you’re still worried about your belongings shifting in the crate, consider using screws or nails to secure it in place. Obviously, this method isn’t going to work on every type of item. You don’t want to drive a nail through glass or porcelain, but it can be effective at securing items with a wooden base. Just make sure you place the nail or screw in a place that isn’t easily visible.

Another option is to use straps. You can pick up some moving straps at most shipping companies. If possible, place the item on a base inside of the box. Use the straps to secure the item to the base. Next, nail or screw the base to the bottom of the crate. Once you add in the protective packing material, your item should arrive unscathed.

Label the Crate

Don’t label only one side of the crate; this is one time when you want to go a little crazy. The goal is to make it impossible for anyone to miss the Fragile label. Place labels on all four sides, and the top and bottom. You should also plan on adding labels with arrows indicating which side is up and down.

Along with adding labels marked Fragile, include ones with the destination address. Even though shipping companies use logistic tools like digital tracking systems and bar codes to ensure every delivery arrives on time and at the right destination, it doesn’t hurt to include it on your label.

If you want, go ahead and list the crate’s weight on the label. This can help alert the shipping company if your crate is too heavy to move single-handedly.

Pick the Right Shipping Company

Finding a crate shipping company isn’t difficult. A quick online search will pull up an extensive list. However, before going with the closest one to your location, it’s a good idea to do a little research.

If you're shipping large, fragile, or high-value items, make sure the company you choose offers Custom Heavy-Duty Wood Shipping Crates. These crates are designed to provide maximum protection during transit, especially for industrial equipment or sensitive materials. A reliable shipping provider should be able to tailor the crate to your item's specifications, ensuring it stays secure and arrives in excellent condition.

Keep Your Items Safe with Crate Shipping

Crate shipping is often the best way to get your fragile belongings from one place to another. Before dropping off your items at a shipping company, do a little research. Also, pay attention to packing and always add in some cushioning materials. This way, your items will show up in perfect condition.
