Top Tips To Weather Proof Your Home

November 16, 2022 by Jeremy Lindy

Our dwellings are constantly under risk from the weather. And regrettably, we receive more rain than is reasonable for our homes. Rainfall has no preference; it is just as likely to overburden your gutters and drains, allowing penetrating damp to force its way into your home, as it is to hasten its advance through your walls. Then there's things like storms, hurricanes and extreme weather that can damage and affect our homes.

Eliminate leaks around windows and doors

Lighting a candle and moving it around your home's entrance and window frames is a simple trick. If it flickers, a drought is approaching. Caulk or weather stripping can be used to seal the draughty areas. One of the best upgrades you can do is weatherproofing your windows.

If you notice any issues with your storm windows, such as increased energy costs or signs of water damage, it's crucial to address them promptly. Consider upgrading your windows and doors with Storm Pro Window and Door to enhance their efficiency and safeguard your home against potential risks.

Insulate the attic or the basement

You'll probably spend the most money on this one, but you'll get the biggest return on your investment. Uninsulated or inadequately insulated attics, basements, and crawl spaces can all lose a lot of heat. Even if you simply roll out additional insulation along the attic's walls and floor, adding insulation to your attic may be a DIY project. Given the moisture problems, which can result in mildew, and the elevated radon levels, which can result in lung cancer, the basement probably calls for a skilled contractor. You can also look for formaldehyde-free, more environmentally friendly insulation produced from recycled materials like denim, newspaper, or wool.

Invest on a smart thermostat

You can maintain your home's perfect temperature with the aid of a smart modern thermostat without having to worry about extensive manual programming. When you're not home, a smart thermostat will lower the temperature to save you money. It will also detect when you come home and raise the temperature. In addition, a smart thermostat can detect colder weather, increase your heating to combat it, and maintain the heat level in your home so that your boiler doesn't have to work as hard to raise the temperature.

Verify the proper installation of the storm windows

Storm windows need to effectively close off a space while lowering your energy costs. If your bill starts to increase quickly, there may have been an error during the window installation process. Make sure there aren't any holes or cracks that have developed since last year. Depending on the type of gap, you can either caulk them or use weather stripping to seal them if there are any. Check for water damage or condensation between the panes if there are no holes or breaks. This could show itself as mould, decaying timber, puffy walls, or peeling paint.

Have a good quality roof

It is important to regularly get your roof checked but also to make sure you have a good quality one to withstand bad and harsh weather. There are lots of things you can consider like corrugated metal roofing panels. Be sure to do your research so that you can make sure you get the best roof for your home
