Top Tips for Moving Your Wine Collection to a New Home

January 13, 2023 by Jeremy Lindy

If you are a wine lover with a decent collection of bottles, then the prospect of moving, and having to relocate your wine with you can be a daunting one.

It’s all too easy for bottles to be broken when you are moving, but if you are careful and you prepare properly, accidents are a lot less likely to happen.

Choose a good moving company

First of all, you should choose a reputable moving company like North American Van Lines, which knows how to handle delicate objects and offer you the insurance you need to feel comfortable transporting your wine collection. An unreliable or inexperienced moving company can spell disaster.

Have an inventory

If you do not already have an inventory of your wines, it is a good idea to take one before moving. Not only so you can ensure everything gets to your new home, but also so you can work out if there are any bottles you do not really want because moving wine bottles can get expensive, due t their weight, and any bottles you can dispose of to friends will help to cut the cost of moving.

Package carefully

Obviously, if you are moving your wine collection with you, then packing is of the utmost importance. You need to ensure that your wine bottles are as safe and secure as they can possibly be when you load them into the moving truck.

Start by investing in as many wine bottles or preferably wooden crates, as you need to ensure that every bottle has a place. Use styrofoam dividers to stop the bottles from banging against each other and potentially causing a breakage, and wrap each crate in a layer of bubble wrap just to be on the safe side.

Before bubble wrapping the boxes, it might also be a good idea to use packing tape to reinforce the bottoms because, when it comes sot heavy loads, the bottom is always the weakest part, and the last thing you want is for your bottles to fall out of the bottom of their crates and smash on the ground, leaving your precious wine to pour away down the drain.

You are also going to want to use packing paper and bubble wrap to ensure that there are no gaps in the boxes your wine is being stored in as this will make it less likely that breakages will happen if your boxes are jostled around.

Do not stack

When loading onto the moving truck, make sure the movers know not to stack these boxes on top of one another as that will make them more likely to topple and smash. They should all be stored at ground level and you should let the movers know they have wine in them so they will be extra careful.

Now that you know how to properly prepare for moving your wine collection, you can rest easy that your favorite white or your fruitiest red will be just fine and waiting for you at your new home.
