Tips to Prepare Your Home For the Winter

September 29, 2021 by Jeremy Lindy

As the weather gets colder and winter approaches, some changes need to be made in your life. You start dressing warmer and in layers, you plug your car in to help it start well and you switch out the lawnmower for the snowblower. You also need to make some changes in and around your home.

If you don’t prepare your home for the winter, it can be a cold and difficult place to be at times. But what exactly can you do in and around your home to get ready for the cold months ahead? Well, that is exactly what this blog post is going to take a look at. Keep reading to hear a few great tips to prepare your home for wintertime.

Make Sure Your Furnace is Working

Few things are as important in the winter as staying warm. While bundling up and using blankets can help, you will eventually require the services of your furnace to keep your help warm and toasty. But in order for this to work, you need to ensure your furnace is working properly.

If it is giving off barely any heat, or none at all, be sure to call a Furnace Repair company to come take a look. They can diagnose the issue and make sure it is fixed up. It is better to test your furnace out before the winter to make sure it is working, before you actually need to have it on.

There are also things you can do to make sure your furnace is operating at its best. This includes keeping the air vents clear of things like furniture and boxes, and changing out the air filter often.

Find and Seal Any Cracks or Air Leaks

Air leaks can be terrible to deal with anytime, but especially the winter. These air leaks let in the outdoor air, which ruins your heating or cooling efforts inside the home. If you constantly have cold air leaking in, getting your home to the optimal temperature will take more time and money as your furnace will need to work harder.

While they most commonly occur around doors and windows, these leaks can appear anywhere in the home. Thankfully, it is quite simple to detect air leaks. Sometimes you can feel the air coming in, but if not, you can have experts come in and perform tests to easily find any.

Once you have found them, be sure to seal them up to give your home an airtight seal to keep the warm air in, and cold air out.

Stock Up Your Pantry

Another thing to do is to stock your pantry for the winter. You should have plenty of nuts and seeds, beans, oils, condiments, pasta and other food that has a long shelf-life and generally stores well on shelves or in your pantry.

Also, consider freezing things to preserve them for later such as bread, baking and fruits/veggies. You want to have as much food in your home as possible, while being careful not to waste much, either.

The main reason for this is to ensure you have enough food if you get snowed in or the treacherous outdoors make it hard to get to the store. Also, the less you have to leave your home to go shopping out in the snow, ice and cold, the better.

Winterizing Your Home

These aforementioned tips will make sure that your home is prepared for whatever winter decides to throw at it. You will be warm, have a fully stocked up pantry and be confident that the heat will be staying in your home, all winter long.
