The Restorative Power of a Daily Coffee Break

April 21, 2022 by Jeremy Lindy

The work schedule is always demanding and usually takes most of your mental energy. This can negatively impact your productivity as the day progresses.

You’ll do better when you take time out for a coffee break.

It will give you just enough time to get up from your seat and grab a cup of coffee. A coffee break is ideal for a change of scenery, a change of body position, and possibly a little bit of physical movement.

The restorative power of a daily coffee break can help boost efficiency and relieve strain and fatigue. Keep on reading to learn more about the power of a daily coffee break.

What is a Coffee Break?

It is a brief break people take from the workday to enjoy a small snack and a glass of espresso heaven. A coffee break usually lasts 10 to 20 minutes. It serves as a brief rest period and social gathering. It is an accepted and welcomed part of a business day in different workplaces.

Why Do You Need a Coffee Break?

A daily coffee break can impact your workday in several ways:

Makes You Feel Valued At Work

Coffee is one of the world’s favorite perks that make people feel valued at their workplaces. You would agree that having high-quality coffee in the office like dark chocolate coffee beans would suggest that your employer cares about your wellbeing.

Encourages Workplace Friendships

In addition to feeling valued at work, coffee breaks are very effective at encouraging workplace friendships.

A social gathering at work during a coffee break makes for a stronger team. People get to support each other and work together smoothly. This helps to create a positive atmosphere at the workplace. You will go home after work with less work-related stress.

Boosts Your Motivation

Taking a coffee break could improve your positivity and engagement at work. Getting a chance to drink a high-quality cup of espresso could motivate you to give your very best.

The caffeine contained in coffee tricks your brain into thinking it isn’t drowsy. Caffeine has a similar structure to adenosine (a substance that makes you feel tired and sleepy).

Caffeine attaches itself to adenosine receptors found in your brain. This bonding process leads to the increase of adenosine. The surplus adenosine signals the adrenal glands to secrete another stimulant called adrenaline.

So, even if you are tired and in need of sleep, caffeine from a cup of coffee will trick your brain into thinking that it is wide awake.

What’s even more interesting is the fact that heavy coffee drinkers grow additional adenosine receptors in their brains. That’s probably why some people may need more than one cup to feel the restorative power of coffee.

Lifts Your Mood

We all know that drinking a morning cup of coffee can lift your mood. You can experience the same effect during a coffee break.

The caffeine contained in coffee is a great natural stimulant for the nervous system. So, drinking a cup of coffee during a break at work could actually lift your mood and help you tackle the rest of the day. This is due to the same adenosine effect that makes you feel alert.

Research also states that coffee drinking results in a reduced risk of depression.

Interestingly, only caffeine contained in coffee has the ideal stimulating effects as opposed to the caffeine found in chocolate or tea.

Boost Your Memory

A 16-ounce cup of coffee can improve your memory for up to 24 hours after consumption. A coffee break may also help you cope with dull chores, as well as recall straightforward information from memory.

Of course, this only works with your short-term memory. But this is good enough because all information is initially stored in short-term memory and only an hour later does it enter your long-term memory.

You may feel less bored when performing repetitive tasks after having a cup of coffee. You may be able to better remember lists of words among other things.

Relieves Headaches

Caffeine obtained from coffee can help relieve headaches. It restricts the blood flow in your brain, which can be a useful effect when it comes to relieving headaches.

Most headaches are usually preceded by the enlargement of cerebral blood vessels. Research has shown that drinking coffee can help reduce blood flow by around 27 percent.

If you get a tension headache at work, a coffee break can help soften it by relaxing the muscles over the back of the head.

Helps You Stay in Shape

Another incredible restorative power of coffee is weight loss. A daily coffee break could help you reclaim your body by encouraging weight loss.

Coffee drinking can help boost calorie burning by suppressing your appetite. It achieves this by increasing the levels of leptin (the hormone that encourages fat storage) in your body.

If you usually go to the gym after work with the intent of losing weight, the coffee breaks can help you burn more fat.

Makes Your Immune System Stronger

A coffee break can help boost your immune system. Coffee is loaded with resourceful nutrients and chemicals that are helpful to your immune system.

Antioxidants and phenolic compounds that are contained in coffee help with cancer prevention and reduce the risk of premature death. It also helps maintain a healthy liver, digestive system, and heart.

But the thing is, you have to stick with freshly ground coffee, which has a higher restorative power. Instant coffee is not highly recommended because it has fewer nutrients.

Conclusion

When daily chores get you down, take a break for coffee and you take advantage of the exhilarating help it offers you.

You can try amazing cocktail recipes that are deliciously smooth and refreshing. You can even switch from a hot cup of coffee to a glass of cold brew on a hot day. You could also add coffee cubes to a glass of milk for a more restorative feel.

Relax over coffee for a few minutes and feel its uplifting power!
