How to Rise Above Your Worst Personal Issues

August 17, 2022 by Jeremy Lindy

The pressure of life and other responsibilities can become overwhelming for us all. Yet the time often comes when you need to rise above your worst problems and make positive changes.

Get Help from Qualified Professionals

It's pretty rare for someone to make it on their own. When you have personal problems such as drug and alcohol addiction, anger issues, and severe mental health disorders, you need help. Fortunately, you are never too far from the help you need. For instance, the professionals at the Renaissance Recovery Center offer services for anyone living in or willing to travel to Gilbert, Arizona. Or you can Google "rehab centers near me" for a list of the best treatment providers in your local area. Help is always a phone call away. You just have to take the first step.

Rise Above Your Worst by Knowing Yourself

"Nosce te Ipsum," or "know thyself," is a well-known Latin phrase with many meanings depending on how you look at it. Greek philosophers like Plato and Socrates used the term often. And to them, it meant understanding the limits of your knowledge. Today, the phrase has a very different meaning, as we apply New Age and modern connotations. You can help yourself by understanding your emotions, desires, and abilities. Additionally, you can use the principle to understand the roots of the worst of your issues, such as triggers and anxiety causes.

Take Solace in the Things You Enjoy

From walking among the ducks in a park to finishing constructive projects such as model making, there is something from which people derive great pleasure. Spending time doing what you love will help you rest your mind when you aren't working. And attribute your time to doing something constructive rather than destructive. Common hobbies include sports and fitness, logical endeavors, and embracing creativity. Working out, playing video games, and photography are perfect examples. On the other hand, you may just want to soak in the tub.

Make Positive Changes at Work

You can indulge your passions for happiness in your spare time. However, like most people, you probably spend 50% or more of your time at work. Therefore, making positive changes that make your work life more pleasurable is healthy. These include the following:

  • Socialize with coworkers for healthy relationships.

  • Don't say yes to everything and do only what you can.

  • Enthusiastically volunteer for extra work if you can do it.

  • Impress your boss by asking about advancement opportunities.

  • See a work counselor or keep a work diary to assess your performance.

Cultivating strong working relationships will help you become part of the group and more likely to be included in decision-making. Volunteering for work is an excellent way to increase your responsibilities. But never take on more than you can handle, or you won't perform well.

Make Moves to Control Your Life

It can sometimes feel like your life is spiraling out of control. And only you have the power to stop this. If things are getting too much, use your legally-entitled vacation days to take some time off work and think about the ways in which you can get your life back to where you want it to be. Change in your life is inevitable, and no one stays on the same course forever. But how you handle the subtle changes in your life's direction determines where you go. So it's helpful to clarify your direction somehow, with a plan or a vision board, and work towards it.

Accept the Uncontrollable to Rise Above Your Worst

You can make changes in your life towards positivity and get it on track for the better. But sometimes, there are curve balls about which you can do nothing. A tragic death, losing your job, or severe illness. These are all things you don't want or ask for, and they can have severe negative consequences. For instance, adults bereaved by a sudden death attempt suicide more than those bereaved by natural causes. In either case, there is nothing you could have done. So it's essential you accept the things you can't change or control, or you will never be happy.

Leave the Past and Move Forward

Further to accepting what you cannot control or change, time is one of these. Anything that happened in the past has happened. And no matter how much you dwell on it, wish it away or lash out at those around you, it cannot be changed. Therefore, it makes no sense to constantly go back and resurface emotional trauma that benefits no one. Conversely, you can't possibly know what the future holds, so it makes no sense to worry yourself sick about that either. All you can control is the here and now, making the present the only thing that truly matters in health.

Summary

Make the changes you need to rise above your worst problems. Getting help from experts is a great move. But you can also improve work performance and try not to dwell on the past.
