How to Avoid Obnoxious Luxury in Your Home

January 17, 2024 by Jeremy Lindy

Have you ever seen homes on social media, in magazines, on TV, or even in movies, and while it’s obvious it’s a luxury home, it just looks outright obnoxious? It’s like throwing every expensive item into the space and expecting it to look good and expensive because everything has a high price tag. Well, you’re probably already aware of this when it comes to fashion.

But this is something that’s pretty prevalent in interior design, too. When you think of a luxury kitchen, there are probably some caricature elements that you probably think about, right?

Maybe it’s marbling everywhere, or nothing but luxury items that look like they came straight from a museum. Well, this isn’t just celebrity homes anymore; really, you’re going to find this now more than ever, even with regular homes. It’s getting to the point where this trend is almost like an expectation. While sure everyone loves luxury in their homes, how can you have this without it feeling overdone, too much, or especially obnoxious? Well, here’s what you need to know!

It’s All About the “Less is More” Approach

The foundation of simplistic luxury begins with decluttering. Embrace a minimalist approach, carefully curating your belongings to showcase only the most essential and meaningful items. You don’t have to go with the Kim Kardashian approach and how her home is, but just have less in your home.  So, with that said, streamlining your space fosters an atmosphere of elegance and visual serenity.

It’s the same when having accessories all around your home (which you should do). So, when accessorizing, adhere to the principle of "less is more." Select a few carefully curated accessories that complement the overall design. You’ll want to think about quality candles, decorative trays, or a carefully chosen vase that can add a touch of luxury without overwhelming the space.

Functional Elegance is Key

One thing that every interior designer is going to tell you what to do would be for you to just merge functionality with elegance in your home design. Choose furnishings that not only look beautiful but also serve a purpose. But overall, multi-functional pieces, such as storage ottomans or minimalist shelving, contribute to an organized and purposeful space.

Go with Neutrals

It’s not about making a statement; it’s about timelessness, and that’s what works best. It’s still luxurious, but it’s subtle. So, you’ll want to opt for a neutral color palette that embodies understated sophistication. Timeless hues such as soft whites, muted greys, and natural tones provide a versatile canvas that complements the simplicity of luxury design, allowing key elements to shine.

Strive for Clean Lines

It’s really going to help if you just try to choose furniture with clean lines and timeless design. Avoid overly ornate or trendy pieces that may detract from the simplicity you're aiming for. In general, a cohesive design language focused on classic aesthetics lends an enduring sense of luxury. It doesn’t have to be overall clean, kind of like how Supreme Luxury is either really clean or really curved, but just try to strive for clean lines or something that’s mostly clean.
