6 Factors That Affect Water Damage Restoration Costs

September 21, 2022 by Jeremy Lindy

Water damage can have serious effects on your home. The cause can be an HVAC. leak, plumbing overflows, blocked gutters, or faulty appliances, but regardless of what triggered it, the more important thing is to have your home repaired immediately.

It's not uncommon to find everything in your home submerged for a prolonged period due to water damage. However, water damage restoration costs will undoubtedly increase if you leave it untreated.

Factors That Influence the Cost of Water Damage Restoration

Water damage can appear to be minimal when it is viewed from the surface. However, you may not realize that water could seep into the deeper areas of your property. Calling water damage restoration professionals is a good idea in such a situation. They can help mitigate future problems and address immediate issues at the same time.

Water damage restoration, however, can be costly due to its nature, and several factors can further impact the restoration expenses that you'll incur. These include the following:

 1. Area Size

Repairing a larger area will obviously take longer and cost more money. Many people will need to be involved during the restoration process, which translates to a bigger labor budget. There will also be a more extensive dehumidification service that will have to be provided to you because of the more extensive coverage. This means more dehumidifiers and other related equipment will be utilized to ensure a complete and effective home restoration.

 2. Water Quality

Water quality can be safe or hazardous, said deepwaterco.com, but if it is polluted, additional treatment and precautions must be considered. This can influence the total restoration costs.

Based on its level of hazard, water can be categorized as follows:

  • Category 1 - Under this category, water is relatively clean and isn't inherently hazardous to you and your pets. It could leak from plumbing fixtures like toilet tanks, faucets, or pipes, but it could also be due to melted snow. Even though Category 1 water isn't contaminated, it could still cause damage to your house.

  • Category 2 - Water that has been contaminated by washing machine or dishwater overflow. Although the water does not have sewage contaminants, it can carry microorganisms like bacteria that can be harmful.

  • Category 3 - This category is also called "black water" because it involves bacteria, harmful chemicals, and sewer contamination. This water is often found in the sewer or from severe floodwaters. It is less likely that any belongings that fall under this category will be salvageable.

 3. Excess Water

You must remove any water that remains on the site after damage. Experts often use water pumps, dehumidifiers, and moisture-absorbent materials to complete this part of the restoration process.

 4. Affected  Items

The cost of water damage restoration depends on the items that were affected. Flooring, for example, is easy to replace no matter how extensive the damage it received. However, this will still depend on the type of home floors involved, especially how they react to water.

Vinyl floors are water-resistant, but if damaged, you only need to take out individual sections to check if the subfloor is affected. Hardwood floors, meanwhile, are more susceptible to damage than other types but will depend on how well they have been protected. On the other hand, ceramic tile floors can strongly resist water. Minor damage is still possible, although repairs may not be necessary if the water doesn't reach the subfloor. It is also vital that the tiles are properly grouted and sealed.

 5. Mold Growth

Mold and mildew are two of the most serious consequences of water damage to the home. They won't only destroy the house's structural integrity, but these fungi can also expose you to various health risks. Thus, you must remove any excess moisture from affected areas in your home to prevent mold growth. Mold mitigation services are recommended options, even if they add to your overall restoration expenses.

 6. Time Lapse

If water damage is not treated right away, it can lead to more serious problems. For instance, mold and mildew can multiply quickly and cause further home damage, for which a different set of repairs will be required. These are often more severe and require more work.

 Key Takeaway

Water damage is one disaster that must be resolved at the soonest possible time. If not, it could lead to further damage to your property. Unfortunately, the costs involved in the restoration work are an issue many homeowners have a hard time contending with.

Several factors that can come in and affect the budget set aside to complete a home restoration project. These include the size of the affected property, the extent of damage to appliances and other home items, the quality of water involved, and the growth of molds. All of these can make restoration efforts emotionally, physically, and financially draining.
