Inside Nate Berkus' First Residential Project: Greenwich Village’s New Boutique Gem

March 20, 2025 by Jeremy Lindy in Real Estate

Renowned interior designer and TV host Nate Berkus has unveiled his first-ever residential development project, The Katharine, located at 118 West 13th Street in Greenwich Village. Known globally for his refined yet deeply personal approach to design, Berkus infuses this boutique project with elements from his own storied connection to one of New York City's most cherished neighborhoods. This exclusive collection of just eight residences marks a significant milestone in Berkus’ celebrated career, perfectly capturing his sophisticated aesthetic while thoughtfully embracing the historic legacy of the original building.

The Katharine is developed by Slate Property Group, a leading New York City-based real estate development and investment firm specializing in adaptive reuse and mixed-use development, in partnership with Avenue Realty Capital. Compass Development Marketing Group serves as the exclusive sales and marketing firm for The Katharine.

Constructed in 1930 as The Katharine House by the Ladies Christian Union, the building originally served as a sanctuary for women seeking education and professional opportunities in early 20th-century New York. Renowned architect Benjamin Wistar Morris designed the structure, embedding it with a balance of grandeur and subtle elegance, elements which Berkus and the acclaimed BKSK Architects have meticulously restored and reimagined. The preserved exterior and carefully refreshed interior spaces pay homage to the building’s rich history, creating homes that elegantly combine pre-war charm with contemporary luxury.

Every residence in The Katharine showcases Nate Berkus’ exceptional eye for detail, from bespoke floor plans and custom millwork to vintage Italian lighting and select homes featuring statement marble fireplaces. Large south-facing windows bathe the interiors in natural light, and thoughtful touches—such as private terraces, direct keyed elevator access, and scenic views of surrounding gardens—provide residents with an exceptional living experience. Berkus’ deeply personal involvement in selecting finishes, layouts, and decor ensures that each home in The Katharine feels uniquely curated, exuding timeless sophistication and comfort.

Amenities at The Katharine elevate the standard of boutique living, featuring a landscaped rooftop terrace with panoramic city views, a well-equipped fitness studio complemented by a tranquil yoga terrace, a 24-hour attended lobby, and private storage units included with each residence. Set along a tranquil, tree-lined street, the building offers residents a serene enclave amidst Greenwich Village’s bustling atmosphere, mere steps from iconic cultural landmarks, boutique shops, and beloved neighborhood cafes.

As The Katharine nears completion, Nate Berkus has successfully crafted a building that embodies his vision of luxurious yet deeply personal urban living. More than simply residences, these homes reflect a thoughtful conversation between past and present—showcasing how great design, when rooted in authenticity and historical context, truly enhances daily life in one of New York’s most beloved neighborhoods.
