Surprising Reasons Why Keeping Your HVAC System in Top Condition Is Vital

September 09, 2022 by Jeremy Lindy

In the US, around 87% of homes have air conditioning and around 50% of the $2,000 families pay annually for energy goes towards cooling or heating. Because comfort is so important for home dwellers, keeping their HVAC system in top condition is vital if optimal temperatures are to be enjoyed all year round. However, there are many more reasons why regular maintenance is essential. Read on to discover just a few.

Reducing Energy Bills

When your HVAC system is poorly maintained, it works harder to produce the output you require. For instance, dirty filters can restrict airflow and force your system into overdrive. This causes components to wear out faster than they should, leading to the need for replacement parts or, in some cases, an entirely new HVAC system. Studies have shown, for instance, that poor maintenance of HVAC systems can increase energy consumption by up to 60%. By scheduling a regular maintenance visit, you can avoid creating problems with your HVAC system, giving it a longer life.

Avoiding Fires

An HVAC system that isn’t in good working order can cause fires owing to factors like gas leaks, frayed or corroded wires, and disconnection (which can cause electrical shorts). Issues such as excessive dryness or voltage problems, meanwhile, can overheat the motor, causing the system to catch fire. It is generally recommended that homeowners have their HVAC system checked twice a year, and that they rely on experienced, licenced maintenance professionals. They should ensure that their system is clean and lubricated, all connections are working well, and components are in good condition.

Maintaining Your Family’s Health

Failing to maintain HVACs can expose your family to bacteria, allergens, mold, and even carbon monoxide. Leaks in gas supply lines can go unnoticed but cause respiratory issues, in addition to posing a fire hazard. Contaminants can typically be found in air docs and condensate drain pans, though they can also build up on air filters. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has found that contaminated HVAC systems can lead to significantly worse symptoms for asthmatics. Two of the most predominant bacteria types found in typical aluminum systems are sphingomonads and methylobacteria, both of which have been found to cause infections, particularly in people who are weak or immune-compromised. Because of their high concentrations on components such as the fins of HVAC exchangers, they have a high potential for discharge into breathable air.

Meeting the Warranty Requirements

If your HVAC system or its components are still under warranty, then you won’t be able to avail of the latter unless you can prove that your system has been duly maintained. To make warranty claims easier, stick with the same maintenance company, as it will be easier to access all records as and when you need them. Keep copies of maintenance records as if you wish to sell your home in the future, buyers may want to rest assured that the HVAC system has been well maintained.

The majority of homes in the US rely on heating and cooling. Keeping your HVAC system is important for many reasons. It saves on energy costs, improves the system’s longevity, helps avoid infections and allergies, and ensures that your system is covered by the warranty, should any breakdown occur or replacement be required.
