How to Survive a Night Alone in the Woods

January 26, 2021 by Jeremy Lindy

There's a lot to be factored in if you are ever going to have a successful night alone in the woods. Spending your alone time in the woods can be a meaningful way to find your purpose in life. But it can go horribly wrong if you are not prepared to handle the challenges that come with the outdoors. Your preparation skills and your resilience will be put to the test. But not to worry, we’ve got you covered. Below are ways on how to survive a night alone in the woods.

Smart Packing

Having reliable gear that you can easily pack will be a great start to ensure that your night in the woods goes smoothly. Ensure that your backpack has everything you'll need for that one night. Staying hydrated is crucial, so consider bringing a 32 oz polar camel tumbler to keep your water cool and easily accessible.

This guide from the guys at https://thepreppingguide.com/ will be a great start in inspiring you on essential camping equipment and survival tools you might need in the great outdoors. But to make it easier for you, below are essential items you'll want to include in your packing list.

  • Flashlight or headlamp

  • Sleeping bag

  • Navigation tools

  • Mini music player for entertainment

  • Toiletries

  • Camping knife

Prepare Yourself Mentally

Spending a night in the woods is not for everyone but so are a million other daring activities. If you love camping and hiking, then this should be a walk in the park. Nevertheless, any first-timer in such an environment will need to take some baby steps before they can brave the outdoors at night. Your mental preparedness will play a significant role in helping you prepare for any eventuality. You can start by going for day camping trips, hikes, or just taking a walk in the park.

Keep Your Lines of Communication Open

Having someone you can talk to can help keep loneliness at bay. Additionally, you'll want to assure your loved ones of your safety. Having a reliable phone that’s fully charged is all that you need to talk to a loved one back at home. Today, you have smartphones that can double up as both your navigation and entertainment tools.

Make Your Night in the Woods More Comfortable

You shouldn't have to endure your alone time in the woods. Today, and thanks to hi-tech camping gear, you can effortlessly achieve a comfortable camping experience. But then again, and as earlier mentioned, it will all depend on your packing list. Sleeping outdoors means that you'll have to at some point deal with bugs, dirt, the fear of the outdoors, and unforeseeable inconveniences. Below are ways to have a comfortable experience when spending a night in the woods:

  • Choose your location wisely - If you are looking to have a great time in the woods alone, then it's of the utmost importance that you choose the ideal location for that. You might consider a campsite that has amenities you can use even for a night. But most importantly, consider campsite locations that are safe and secure.

  • Tent - You'll want to have a tent that you can easily manage to set up alone. The tent will come in handy to protect you from the elements and to also keep you warm. Ease of use, the material of construction, weight, and tent flooring are all important factors to consider when choosing a camping tent.

  • Choose a delicious meal - The fact that you will be spending a night in the woods should not stop you from enjoying a delicious meal. Think beyond the conventional camping food ideas and opt for foods you can easily prepare while minding your diet.

  • Prepare for bad weather - The weather can be unpredictable and it's only wise to bring extra layers. Consider cozy layers that will help to keep you warm and comfortable at night. For a cold night, you can light up a bonfire and enjoy its warmth as you gaze at the sky. But don't forget to put out any fires before retreating to your home.

  • Protect yourself from the bugs - Bugs can be annoying. Having an insect repeller on standby can help to ward off those small creatures and allow you some peace of mind.

There's a lot that can be done to make your night in the woods a success. Unplugging from civilization is always a great way to unwind. It will help to rejuvenate your spirits and allow you to recover from a busy schedule. But then again, your preparedness will help to ensure that everything goes smoothly. The above pointers will provide you with important ways on how to survive in the woods alone.
