How To Keep The Spark Alive After You Have A Baby?

February 29, 2024 by Jeremy Lindy

As you are welcomed into the exhilarating, exhausting, and utterly rewarding world of parenthood, your romantic life, understandably, takes a nosedive. You begin to wonder if your love still knows no bounds - even in this trying time of unending diapers. From delegating to finding a freaking babysitter, here are some tried-and-true tips for keeping the passion alive after having a baby arrives.

Riding The Parenting Rollercoaster

When you're knee-deep in dirty diapers, running on caffeine, and barely catching any shut-eye, it seems like chaos reigns supreme, and romance is the last thing on your mind. It is 100% normal and happens to literally all the new parents - you have to give yourself time to recuperate and catch your breath. It’s not gonna be easy. Not for a long time, but you will get used to it, and some glimpses of your old self will become more and more noticeable. That is when you can begin reconnecting with that old self - and with your partner, of course.

Burning The Midnight Oil

No matter if you are a birthing parent, a breastfeeding parent, or simply a caretaker, you know the sleepless nights are the worst. It is easy to get frustrated, annoyed at each other, or just stay silent - but what if you try some snuggle action instead? Those late-night feeds and diaper changes - turn them into moments to connect. Whisper sweet nothings, share goofy jokes, and remind each other that you're in this together, riding the ups and downs of parenthood side by side.

Keep The Lines Of Communication Open

It's all about talking the talk. No matter how hard this sounds, try to find time to chat about your feelings, desires, and fears. Share the load, both in baby duties and emotional support and don't sweep important conversations under the rug.

  • Schedule Some Adult Time

Yep, spontaneity might be as rare as a unicorn with a baby in tow, but scheduling some alone time is key. Plan a cozy dinner after the little one hits the hay, or surprise your partner with a Netflix and chill session as you let them relax and you handle the bedtime routine. Making time for each other sends the message that your relationship is a top priority.

  • Get Creative Between The Sheets

Parenthood is all about thinking outside the box, right? So why not bring that creativity into the bedroom? Talk about fantasies and reassure each other of your sexuality - especially for new mothers, it can be an elusive thing to come back to. After all, being parents doesn't mean you can't also be lovers.

Sure, when the baby is napping close by, getting sexy isn’t on the cards - but you can always sneak into the next room and keep quiet - it might even add friskiness to your action. And, of course, you’ve gotta be quick, since the baby can wake up any second. Calling for help would be smart - adult toys like bullet and egg vibrators are tiny but powerful and can help her get aroused faster and finish quicker. Not to mention, these vibes are good for longer sessions, too, when you have time to take a bath together, perhaps.

No matter how little time you’ve got, don’t skimp on foreplay and compliments. Make sure your partner feels desired.

Take Time Out Together

Parenting is like a marathon, and now and then, you need to take a breather. Whether it's a quick weekend getaway or just a quiet stroll around the block, spending quality time away from the baby strengthens your bond. Babysitters, grandparents, even daycare for a couple of hours - give yourself the gift of alone time. Remember, a happy couple equals a happy home for the little one.

Prioritize Some "Me" Time

A well-rested, content parent is better equipped to nurture a loving relationship. Trade-off baby duties to ensure each of you gets a chance to recharge those batteries.

Nothing Is Impossible

In conclusion, while welcoming a new bundle of joy into your lives may bring about changes in your relationship dynamics, it's crucial to remember the importance of spending quality time together as a couple, even with a small baby in the crib. Despite the challenges and adjustments that come with parenthood, nurturing your relationship remains essential for maintaining intimacy, communication, and connection.

Via those moments with each other, you strengthen your bond as partners and create a nurturing environment for your growing family. Yes, parenthood is a wild ride, but keeping the spark alive - is not impossible. It takes work, patience, and a willingness to roll with the punches. But in the end, it's those messy, magical moments that eventually bring the spark back.
