Algae-Free Oasis: Techniques for Preserving Pool Clarity

April 22, 2024 by Jeremy Lindy

Owning a backyard pool brings much joy during the summer months. Swimming pools offer a cool escape from hot weather, a backdrop for special get-togethers with loved ones, and a private retreat for unwinding after a busy day. Nevertheless, every pool owner is familiar with the annoyance of managing algae growth that can transform a stunning blue pool into a cloudy green mess. If not controlled, algae can cause slimy pool walls, blocked filters, and possible health hazards, apart from its unattractive appearance. With a few basic preventative steps and quick treatment, you can maintain a crystal-clear pool throughout the entire season.

Understanding Algae

Algae are microscopic plant-like organisms that enter pools through rainwater, wind, or by being tracked in on people's feet and swimsuits. While there are thousands of algae species, the most common types found in pools are green, yellow, black, and mustard algae. Pools make an ideal environment for algae since they thrive in moisture, warmth, sunlight, and areas with high nitrogen content like debris and swimmer's waste.

Algae Growth Factors

Several key factors can contribute to the growth of algae in your pool:

  • If your pool's pH, alkalinity, and chlorine levels are not properly maintained, it creates an ideal environment for algae to proliferate.

  • Stagnant water allows algae to accumulate and spread. Invest in the right swimming pool pump for proper circulation

  • Leaves, dirt, and other organic materials that get into the pool provide nutrients that feed algae growth.

Prevention Strategies

  • The best defence against algae is a good offence. Implement these proactive measures to keep your pool sparkling:

  • Run the pool pump during the hottest part of the day and overnight to prevent stagnant water where algae thrive.

  • Maintain proper chlorine levels between 1-3 ppm to kill algae before it can take hold. Test chlorine levels frequently and add chlorine as needed.

  • Shock the pool weekly with chlorine or non-chlorine shock treatment to destroy contaminants like sweat, urine, and other nitrogen sources that feed algae.

  • Brush the pool walls and floor frequently to prevent algae from adhering to surfaces. Invest in a good pool vacuum to help remove dirt and debris efficiently.

  • Keep the pool pH between 7.2-7.8 as algae love alkaline conditions.

Treatment Tips

Despite your best preventative efforts, algae blooms can sometimes sneak up quickly and take hold. Acting promptly with the right treatment is critical to clear things up before the algae becomes more difficult to kill. Here are some tips:

  • Identify the type of algae you're dealing with. Different species may require different treatment approaches for the best eradication.

  • Brush all pool surfaces vigorously to remove any algae clinging to walls and floors. Vacuum up any debris.

  • Shock the pool aggressively with a chlorine, non-chlorine, or combination shock treatment. Shocking raises chlorine levels temporarily to kill the algae. Follow product guidance on quantities needed based on pool size.

  • Run the filter continuously for 24-48 hours to allow the shock treatment to circulate fully.

  • You may need to repeat brushing and shocking until the water is clear.

  • Clean the filter thoroughly after the bloom is gone to remove any lingering algae or contaminants.

  • Consider an algaecide treatment to help prevent future recurrence. Many algaecides provide residual protection by setting up a protective barrier.

With diligent prevention and prompt treatment, algae don't need to spoil your poolside fun and relaxation. By establishing good maintenance routines, using the right algaecide treatment, and making the correct investment for a pool pump in Australia, you can enjoy your sparkling backyard oasis all season long. Clear water, healthy swimming, and wonderful memories await!
