The Best Destinations to Stay in New York State this Winter

January 07, 2025 by Jeremy Lindy in Travel

As winter blankets New York State in a serene beauty, it unveils the most enchanting destinations to explore during the chilly season. From the ice-skating spots of Ithaca to the snow-covered wonders of Chestertown, each destination offers a unique winter adventure to leave you with wonder, warmth, and unforgettable moments. So, if you're seeking a snowy getaway in New York State, here are the best destinations.

1. Ithaca

While Ithaca is a fantastic place to visit any time of the year, spending winter break in this gorgeous destination will reward you with stunning winter scenery and fun outdoor activities. Located in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York, Ithaca is renowned for its natural beauty, enhanced by the snowfall in winter, transforming the area into a magical winter wonderland. While covered in snow, the parks and gorges look more inviting in winter.

Ithaca is renowned for its proximity to stunning waterfalls and gorges. While it's a popular destination in the summer, it looks even more enchanting in the wintertime when the landscape is full of glistening white snow and ice.

Witnessing a waterfall frozen in the winter is truly a spectacular sight. The best way to admire Ithaca's magical winter scenery is on a hike. Explore the ploughed Gorge Trail at Taughannock Falls State Park and marvel at the awe-inspiring views of the tallest waterfall in the Finger Lakes region.

You also have the option to go ice skating in Ithaca. There are various places to enjoy ice skating. If you prefer to skate indoors, head to Cass Park or The Ring. For outdoor pond skating and sledding, venture into Rice Hill.

2. Lake Placid

Lake Placid has some of the most popular winter resorts in upstate New York. Having hosted the Winter Olympics in 1932 and 1980, it is a haven for winter sports enthusiasts. Here, you can enjoy numerous winter activities, such as skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, bobsledding, and more.

Embarking on a toboggan ride is undeniably one of the most thrilling activities at Lake Placid. The 30-foot wooden trestle toboggan chute transforms the adventure into a nostalgic journey as you zoom across the frozen expanse of Mirror Lake. Typically opening its doors around the first weekend of February, the Toboggan Chute promises an exhilarating winter escapade. These vintage toboggans can traverse over 1,000 feet across the frozen lake surface, offering an incredible experience.

A winter dog sled ride around frozen Mirror Lake is another exhilarating activity in Lake Placid. Led by expert mushers and a team of energetic Alaskan huskies, you will glide through the Adirondack wilderness on a traditional dog sled. The activity provides a thrilling blend of speed and natural beauty, making your winter holiday more enjoyable.

3. New York City

New York City transforms into a magical winter wonderland, making it a fantastic destination for the holiday season. The city's iconic landmarks, such as Times Square and Central Park, dazzle with festive lights, luring holidaymakers worldwide.

In addition, the city's renowned cultural institutions host seasonal performances and exhibits in winter. Meanwhile, winter markets, like the Union Square Holiday Market, offer unique gifts and treats and are a fun place to explore while soaking up the local culture.

Ice skating at Rockefeller Centre should be on top of your list of things to do. Among the world's most iconic rinks, Rockefeller Centre promises an unforgettable winter adventure. Open from early November to April, secure your timed ticket in advance to bypass lines. Immerse yourself in the enchanting atmosphere of this renowned rink, creating cherished memories against the backdrop of the city's glittering skyline.

Indulge in the quintessential New York winter experience by exploring the city's outdoor holiday markets. These enchanting winter markets offer a festive haven for shopping, sipping, and immersing yourself in the holiday spirit. Stroll through real-life winter wonderlands as you shop for unique gifts, from charming ornaments to locally crafted arts and crafts.

4. Woodstock

Woodstock can be a great place to visit in winter for a peaceful and charming winter retreat. Nestled in the Catskill Mountains, Woodstock has some of the best glamping spots in New York state. The town also offers several attractions and activities to cater to different tastes and preferences.

Snowshoeing or winter biking along the Ashokan Rail Trail is the perfect activity for adventurous travellers. This 11.5-mile trail traces the reservoir, presenting some of the Catskills' most expansive and breathtaking views. The trailhead allows you the flexibility to choose your desired distance. For equipment, numerous rental shops offer rentals for snowshoes and fat-tire bikes, ensuring a thrilling exploration of this scenic winter wonder.

For more thrills, experience the rush of downhill skiing at Belleayre, which boasts advanced facilities for a safe and enjoyable adventure. To ensure your spot on the slopes, purchase your tickets in advance. With limited skiers allowed, those fortunate enough to secure a reservation are in for a fantastic experience, not to mention incredible views.

5. Chestertown

Chestertown can be a great winter destination for those seeking a scenic and serene winter getaway in New York State. Nestled in the Adirondack Mountains, it boasts picturesque snow-covered landscapes and a captivating winter atmosphere.

Adventurous travellers can enjoy plenty of outdoor activities, from snowmobiling to snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Exploring the snowy woods of the Adirondacks on a snowmobile is a thrilling adventure. Various companies in Chestertown provide snowmobile tours tailored to riders of all skill levels, offering an exhilarating experience. Don your winter gear and embark on a day of excitement and snowy escapades!

Aside from the fun adventures, Chestertown hosts winter festivals to entertain all visitors. Witnessing these events opportunities is a fantastic way to engage with the local community and immerse in the local culture. One such event is the Long Lake Winter Carnival. Set against the stunning Adirondack backdrop, the carnival features a medley of activities, from snowmobile races to bonfires and fireworks, creating a lively and festive winter atmosphere.

Visitors love Chestertown's cosy atmosphere in winter. The town's small size contributes to an intimate atmosphere, perfect for couples looking for a romantic escape away from the hustle and bustle of the more crowded destinations in New York.
