How to Make Your Home Feel Bigger

How to Make Your Home Feel Bigger

January 24, 2020 by Jeremy Lindy in Real Estate

Even if your square footage is lacking, there are several ways to make your home feel bigger. Sometimes making even a few small changes can make a big difference in your in-home comfort. Here’s a simple and easy guide on how to make your home feel bigger without making major renovations.

Add mirrors

Adding mirrors to a home really opens it up. The reflection can make the room feel as though it got an extension. Hanging a large mirror on the wall or placing it on a tabletop—facing a window—can make a room feel much larger. A great place to utilize this trick is in narrow hallways, stairways, and rooms with a lack of natural light. For example, if you have a small bedroom with just one window, place the bed on the wall facing the window and hang a large mirror over the bed. The light will reflect from the mirror, brightening the room and making it feel much more spacious.

Change your window treatments

Updating your window treatments can make a huge difference in the appearance of rooms within your home. Heavy curtains, curtains that are too small, and old or clunky window treatments can all bog down your windows and block out natural light, which is one of the most important factors in how spacious a home feels. Swap out your old window treatments with airy curtains that feature lighter colors and thinner materials. It’s important to factor your light and privacy needs into your window treatment choices so that you have a good balance that fits your lifestyle.

De-clutter

One super-easy way to cut down on wasted space is to de-clutter your home. Simply picking up random items that collect in certain areas of your homes and either getting rid of them or putting them away in an out-of-sight location can do wonders for your home’s available space.

Another source of room-shrinking clutter is décor. Intentional décor can make a room feel homey and cute, but too much in one space or clashing pieces can really make a room feel smaller. Re-evaluate your décor, and try to eliminate any pieces that don’t fit style-wise or physically.
