What Are The Most Important Qualities To Look For When Hiring A Lawyer?

August 26, 2022 by Jeremy Lindy

Whenever you need to make decisions there'll be important things to consider first. This applies whether you're researching last-minute spring break trips or hiring a lawyer. If you're currently in need of legal assistance, it's crucial to realize that not all attorneys are created equal. In order to have a successful outcome, it's vital that you hire someone who has the qualities you're looking for. In this article, we'll discuss what those qualities might be, so you can find the right lawyer for your specific needs.

Experienced

Make sure the lawyer has sufficient experience in the area of law that you need help with. If you're facing a complicated divorce, for example, you wouldn't want to hire a lawyer who mostly handles traffic violations. The website of injury lawyer, Tad Thomas reflects the fact that people want to know about attorneys' legal accreditations and affiliations, and to access someone with decades of experience and a history of success. Potential clients want professionals who are familiar with car, truck or motorcycle accidents, medical malpractice, wrongful death and more. Make sure the lawyer has sufficient experience in the area of law that you need help with. If you're facing a complicated divorce, for example, you wouldn't want to hire a  spinal cord injury attorney.

Here are some advantages of choosing an experienced lawyer:

  • They'll have a better understanding of the law and how it applies to your case

  • They'll be able to anticipate the other side's moves

  • They'll have developed relationships with key players in the legal system, which can be helpful in getting your case resolved quickly

  • They'll know what kind of evidence is necessary to win your case

  • They'll be able to spot potential problems early on and develop a strategy to overcome them

Local

You should choose someone who's local and familiar with the laws in your state (e.g. regarding the Statute of Limitations). They'll be better able to serve and protect your interests and they'll also be more familiar with the judges and court system in your area (e.g. in criminal cases). Their relationships with local judges and prosecutors could be beneficial when negotiating a plea deal or sentence. Hiring a seasoned personal injury attorney who understands how the local legal environment operates can significantly impact the direction of your case. This familiarity can often lead to more informed decisions at critical points in the legal process.

Local lawyers tend to be more affordable than those who practice in multiple areas. It'll also be easier to pop round for a lunchtime chat or to drop off important documentation. This can save you time and money compared to taking time off work to make visits further afield.

Personable

It's important to feel relaxed with a lawyer because the relationship must be founded on trust. You'll need to be able to rely on them and feel confident that they have your best interests at heart. This is where having a free initial consultation and meeting them personally can be invaluable. Remember that you may be discussing personal and sensitive things with this individual, such as your medical or financial details.

When meeting the lawyer, decide whether they make you feel at ease and whether they're someone you could sit down and have a cup of coffee with. If not, keep looking because there are plenty of great lawyers out there who would be more than happy to meet with you and get to know you better.

A Good Reputation

Good personal recommendations are always worth considering when you're researching which lawyer to hire. You may wish to reach out to family, friends and colleagues for these. Make sure they had similar legal needs to you, whether it was for estate planning, slip and fall accidents or something else.

When looking for an estate planning attorney, it's important to verify that they have a strong track record in handling wills, trusts, and probate cases. On the other hand if you’re seeking a lawyer for a slip and fall accident, you’ll want someone with proven expertise in personal injury law, particularly cases involving premises liability.

You can also learn a lot about a lawyer’s reputation by reading online reviews, including those posted on their own websites. A good reputation means that the lawyer has a track record of success and is respected by their peers. This is important because it means they're more likely to get good results for you. A bad reputation, on the other hand, can be a red flag. It's true that not everyone will post good reviews, especially if they don't achieve the outcome they wanted. However, it's important to heed the warnings if multiple people had a bad experience with a specific lawyer.

Transparent Over Fees

This is important because you need to be sure of what you'll be paying for, and that there are no hidden costs. Your initial consultation can be the perfect opportunity to ask about their fees. Ask how they charge, whether it's by the hour, flat rate, or contingency fee. If they charge by the hour, find out what their hourly rate is and how many hours they estimate your case will take.

If they charge a flat rate, find out what's included in that fee. If they charge on a contingency basis, find out what percentage they'll take if they win your case. You should also ask if there are any other costs associated with hiring them, such as filing fees or expert witness fees. Get all of this information in writing so that you can review it and make an informed decision about whether or not to hire the lawyer.

Available And Responsive

The ability of a lawyer to be available when you need them is crucial. If they're constantly busy or unresponsive, it'll make working with them very difficult. This can end up causing a lot of delays and frustration, which is the last thing you need when you're already dealing with legal issues.

Being responsive also shows that the lawyer's organized and efficient. This is important because it means they'll be able to handle your case in a timely and effective manner. It also shows that they're good at communicating, which is essential in any professional relationship. Before you proceed, explain how you wish to be contacted, whether it's by letter, phone, email or something else. Finally, ask about their office hours because some firms can be contacted 24/7.

If you choose a lawyer who has these important qualities you'll soon reap the benefits. They'll apply their knowledge and expertise to your case and help you achieve a successful outcome.

Whilst their services may cost you money, it will have been worth it for the end results - whether it was justice, financial compensation or something else.
