The Modern Game Room: What Does it Include?

October 03, 2023 by Jeremy Lindy

The game room has been a part of modern housing for decades. The concept is simple: a game room is a place for guests to gather and socialize. As the name implies, it usually involved a game—along with plenty of chatter and free reign to make noise. The most classic part of a game room is the pool table.

However, modern times have changed what types of games your guests might expect to see. For a while, it may have been a ping-pong table, a foosball table, or even an air hockey table. But in 2023, it’s even more likely that guests will expect a game room to be almost fully, if not entirely, digital.

That’s because most people associate gaming with screens and controllers. This is true for those who enjoy playing their new PlayStation 5, along with gamers who have an Oculus headset and VR controllers. As video gaming goes mainstream, just about everyone is exploring games like Beat Saber, Among Us, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

Others might instead focus on laptops and PCs to play games like blackjack and roulette—even including live dealer games. Though not often clumped with traditional video games, many people enjoy unwinding by playing on platforms like PokerStars Casino, which includes hundreds of games to choose from. But between consoles, PCs, and VR, it’s clear that nailing the modern gaming room takes a bit of skill.

Here's what you need to know.

A Wireless Approach

A good game room can be separated from a great game room based on a single metric: how many cords are visible? There are plenty of cordless options available, which we’d recommend you take advantage of. Similarly, you can also focus on furniture that includes plenty of hidden storage.

First and foremost, organizing controllers, devices, and consoles makes it easier to find them when it's time to have some fun. Second, keeping cords hidden away makes your game room feel open, tidy, and comfortable.

An Ergonomic Setup

If there’s one straightforward difference between pool tables and PlayStations, it’s the screen—and staring at a screen has implications for the body. As you’re creating your perfect game room, always keep posture and comfort in mind. This means that you should pay close attention to where your screen (or screens) is arranged and what type of furniture you have.

Screens, for example, should be arranged at the same level as your eyes. If not, placing them slightly above eye level is the next best option. For furniture, target pieces that offer back and neck support. These tips will let you game in comfort for longer.

A Case for Multi-Use

As we outlined above, some gamers in your household might be focused on a PlayStation, while others are interested in VR games or casino games. If you want to get the most out of your game room, you can invest a bit of time and money to make sure that it’s multi-use for everyone.

For example, you will probably want a desk for a PC setup, a large-screen television for consoles and handhelds like a Nintendo Switch, and then plenty of space for VR gaming. Keep in mind that most VR headsets and controllers have remote sensors that will need to be installed around your game room.

A Pro Tip List for Gadgets

So far, we’ve covered what types of devices, furniture, and games you might expect to set up in your game room. The focus is clearly on advanced technology. So, which other gadgets do you need to complete your game room?

We’ve got a few suggestions for you based on which type of gamers you live with. For PC and browser gamers, we recommend investing in a gaming wrist wrest, which minimizes wrist strain. For those who enjoy console gaming, we recommend investing in wireless controllers to avoid extra cord tangling. Lastly, for VR gamers, we recommend using a tripod sensor holder, which is easy to fold up and store. This means you won’t see any sensors between gaming sessions.
