Small Design Changes That Can Make a Big Impact in Your Kitchen Remodel

May 12, 2025 by Jeremy Lindy

A kitchen remodeling does not necessarily have to be a complete overhaul to look new and functional. At times, a few practical changes will make the work area more efficient and seem newer. You can focus on the trimmings if your cabinets are still functional or if your layout is already efficient. The trimmings can streamline the look, provide additional storage, and make cooking more convenient.

From countertop remodel to hardware upgrade, every choice can transform the sensation your kitchen provides on a daily basis. Here in this article, we're going to discuss six minor design tweaks that can add real value. These are some things you can do to make you love your kitchen even more. Let's dive into the details.

Upgrade Your Countertops

Countertops carry a lot of the visual weight of a kitchen. If yours are scratched, chipped, or outdated, they can bring your whole room down in terms of looks. It doesn't necessarily mean that you have to redo the layout or spend a fortune to replace them.

You can focus on new materials that offer function and a crisp appearance. For instance, you can look for natural stone countertops that will fit a range of color schemes while offering heat and scratch resistance. When executed well, a new countertop will give your kitchen a completed, finished surface that will perform admirably and will age beautifully. It's one of those changes that truly lasts for the longest time.

Swap Out Old Cabinet Hardware

Replacing cabinet hardware is probably the easiest way of refreshing how your kitchen looks without changing the whole cabinet system. Aged or outdated handles can cause otherwise solid cabinetry to look uninviting. New hardware—like pulls and knobs—can be applied to reframe the look and provide a cleaner, more polished sensation in the room.

You can choose finishes to match the hue of your kitchen, i.e., brushed nickel for a bright, crisp look or matte black for contrast. Ensure the space and scale of the new equipment are comparable to your existing setup to prevent the need to drill new holes or make other extra changes. Such an adjustment is simple, but it can make your kitchen feel more intentional and modern.

Change the Backsplash

The backsplash protects your walls and provides a definitive visual break in your kitchen between cabinets and counters. If it's outdated or worn out, it can simply be replaced to instantly update your kitchen. You don't need to tile the entire wall—you can focus on the areas that matter like the sink or stove.

Subway tile gives a clean, classic look, but larger tiles can reduce grout lines and allow for easy cleaning of your backsplash. Glass, stainless steel, and ceramic are also common moisture- and heat-resistant materials. Choose a color or design that complements your cabinets and counters. A thoughtfully chosen backsplash will add texture and structure to the kitchen without necessitating a full remodel.

Install Open Shelving

Removing a few of the upper cabinets and adding open shelves can give you a feeling of openness and functionality in your kitchen. It's a quiet step that alters the way you utilize the space. Shelves enable you to store everyday items within easy reach, but they also give you a spot to place simple dishes or glass containers.

You can use solid brackets and solid materials like metal or wood to stabilize and secure the placed shelves. Also, limit the contents of the shelves so they do not get messy and appear organized. This kind of update is best paired with some good lighting and a neutral wall color so the shelves can stand out while still blending with your space.

Update Your Sink and Faucet

The sink is, without a doubt, the most-used fixture in any kitchen. If it's too shallow, too small, or hard to clean, replacing it can make most daily tasks easier. A deeper single-basin sink will offer additional room to maneuver, especially when cleaning large pots or baking sheets. You can pair it with a modern faucet that includes a pull-down sprayer for more reach when doing some cleaning.

Composite and stainless steel materials are long-lasting and will not weigh down your counter. Once you have good plumbing, you should be able to install the sink and faucet without having to change the entire setup.  It’s a focused upgrade that supports function first, with enough styles to fit in a new or existing design.

Improve Your Kitchen Lighting

A well-lit kitchen is simpler to use and makes the entire area feel cleaner. If your current configuration is one ceiling light or low-watt bulbs, switching up the lighting scheme can change the whole thing. You can use three categories: task lighting beneath the cabinets, ambient lighting in the ceiling, and accent lighting to draw attention to details.

Under-cabinet lighting, track lighting, or recessed thin lights will all function in your design. But pay attention to color temperature—cold white light increases focus, and warmer tones will soften the area out. Replacing your lights won't remake the room, but will change each surface's appearance and sensation. It’s a detail that affects everything else around it.

A few little design adjustments can make a big difference in how your kitchen will appear and operate. You don't need to renovate the whole room to see a significant change. Small freshening up with new hardware, better lighting, or a new backsplash can revamp the space without much trouble. Every change counts, making your kitchen more functional and well-designed. Whether you are focusing on function or form, these innovations will give you a greater sense of control over your environment. Start with one, and add others later on.
