Parts of Marijuana Plants, Its Characteristics and Their Uses

August 23, 2022 by Jeremy Lindy

Because it can thrive in all climates, the cannabis plant is also known as the marijuana plant. It is legalized in many countries for recreational and medical purposes, with numerous dispensaries offering high-quality cannabis products. People are interested in the anatomy and uses of cannabis plants. Notably, of those who consume cannabis, 23.56% engage in daily heavy cannabis use, shedding light on varying consumption patterns within the growing interest surrounding cannabis.

Parts of a Cannabis Plant

According to Altitude Organic Cannabis, a Colorado-based Keystone dispensary, this is the list of all the characteristics and parts of marijuana plants.

Flower

The cannabis plants' smokable flowers have a teardrop-shaped structure and are covered with trichomes. Pistils are attached to the bracts of the flowers or small protective leaves. The Cola is the central part of a flower and is usually found at the stem's end. They can only be found on female plants.

Trichomes

Trichomes are crystal-like hairs that surround the marijuana plant. They play an essential role in protecting the cannabis plant from harm.

Nodes

Nodes are where branches form from the main stem or another branch. The nodes are significant because they determine whether the cannabis plant is male or female. They can also be used to grow buds and fan leaves.

Fan Leaves

These are the famous leaves you see on clothing and other merchandise as fan leaves. These leaves are responsible for photosynthesis and are, therefore, one of the essential parts of a cannabis plant. However, they are often discarded because they don't have enough trichomes.

Sugar Leaves

Sugar leaves are another type of cannabis leaf. These leaves are smaller and more covered in trichomes. They appear to be covered with sugar, which is why they are called sugar leaves. Sugar leaves are the cannabis plant's most prevalent ingredient. It is covered with trichomes.

Stem

The stem of a cannabis plant supports all its parts, including the leaves and branches. The stems of healthy cannabis plants can be found in various colors, from vibrant lime green to deep red.

Roots

Cannabis plants have white, long roots. The taproots and lateral roots are the two main parts. The taproots are the largest and thickest of the roots. Lateral roots are the smallest roots of the cannabis plant that grow parallel to the taproots.

Different Types of Weed Plants

Knowing the history of cannabis is an excellent place to start if you want to keep up to date with the origins and evolution of your favorite cannabis products. This includes not only knowing the parts of cannabis plants but also the various types and strains.

You should be able to identify the differences between the different varieties of marijuana. There are many long-held beliefs about the effects of sativas and indicas on the body. Still, current research indicates that cannabis' effects are determined by the person's endocannabinoid and plant-specific cannabinoid profiles.

Cannabis is classified as one of the following categories, despite this:

  • Indica - Indica-leaning marijuana plants produce dense, thick, and heavy buds during flowering. These strains are believed to give users a "body high" rather than a more cerebral high.

  • Sativa - Sativa plants produce more airy, well-formed buds than Indica plants. Many believe that Sativa strains are more cerebral and energetic than Indica plants, which can lead to a "buzzy" feeling.

  • Hybrid - A hybrid of Indica and Sativa, hybrid strains tend to deliver a more balanced high.

  • Hemp - Hemp plants belong to the cannabis family. However, they are different from regular weed plants in that they only produce trace amounts of THC, the cannabinoid responsible for the intoxicating effects. The 2018 Farm Bill in the United States defined hemp as a cannabis crop that contains 0.3% THC. Hemp plants also produce cannabidiol (CBD), which is an important cannabinoid. Their fibers can be used to make a variety of textiles.

It is possible to break it down further by identifying the various strains that fall under each of the three main categories: Indica, Sativa, and hybrid. This will allow you to understand and target the suitable strains for you.

To effectively experience the diverse benefits of cannabis, consumers should consider the quality of their products and the knowledge of their local dispensaries. Montana residents searching for high-quality cannabis options, look for the best dispensary Billings MT has to offer, where knowledgeable staff can guide you in finding the right strains for your needs and preferences. Just remember, always consume responsibly and stay within the legal limits of your state.

Recreational Uses of Cannabis Plant Parts

There are parts of marijuana plants that lack enough trichomes. These trichomes are rich in cannabinoids and terpenes, as well as flavonoids. These three compounds are crucial to getting high from marijuana.

The flowers are the best and most effective option for deciding which parts of marijuana plants to smoke. Flowers are covered in trichomes and contain many chemical compounds. They can be dried and ground before being used or smoked.

The leaves are another excellent part.

Fan leaves don't have enough trichomes, so they are not recommended for smoking. However, sugar leaves are covered in trichomes, making them useful for various cannabis products such as extracts, juices, and edibles.

The roots, stems, and nodes do not contain enough trichomes for a high. The smoke can damage your lungs, but it can still be used to make other things like teas, seasonings, and juices.

Key Takeaway

If the vast terrain of cannabis research has taught us anything, it is that the plant cannot be reduced to a single component (the buds) or target chemical (CBD, THC, etc). Every portion of this plant can be used for nourishment, healing, and environmental benefit.

What is important is that you obtain your cannabis from a well-respected dispensary to ensure the product you're purchasing is high-quality and safe.
