How to Create a Luxurious Add-On Guest Room

January 03, 2022 by Jeremy Lindy

Are you looking to increase the value of your home by building an impressive add-on guest room? Or do you have family members or friends coming for an extended visit next summer? Whatever your reasons, creating a luxurious guest room is not an easy task, and you’ll likely need plenty of advice to succeed.

In this guide, you’ll learn about the benefits of an add-on guest room, the costs associated with it, what type of colors to choose for the room, and ways to make your guest room feel like a luxurious hotel. Keep reading to learn all about it!

The Advantages of Building an Add-On Guest Room

There are numerous advantages that you’ll gain from building an add-on guest room in your home. These benefits include:

  • You will add more value to your house, and the resale cost of your home will appreciate.

  • In-law suites, which often come with a bathroom and a cooking space, are sought-after and offer even more value for your home.

  • You can repurpose the guest room space into multiple functions, such as a recreation room, play area for your kids, or an impressive home office.

Your friends and family visiting from afar will also rave about your luxurious guest room. Now, let’s consider where you can put the guest space in your home.

Where You Might Want to Put Your Guest Room

There are several options of where you could put your guest room. You could either have a professional build an addition to connect it to your home or potentially repurpose an unfinished basement or attic (or any other unused space).

You could also build detached quarters in your backyard, known as a guest house. Do you want to have the guest room next to the kitchen or the living room? Do you want the bathroom down the hall? You’ll need to consider what’s best for your home. You can hire BoxdLiving to decide what's best when it comes to these decisions.

You will want to discuss these options with a professional builder or carpenter and examine your property and the costs that go along with each option.

Costs to Create a Luxurious Add-On Guest Room

The costs associated with adding a luxurious guest room to your home will depend on multiple factors, such as:

  • The size and square footage of the space

  • The type of guest room you envision

  • The materials used and the amount needed

  • Whether you add extra, expensive finishing touches

For example, it can cost you anywhere from $45,000 to $65,000 to build a guest house that is 600 to 700 square feet in size. Speak to a professional to learn more about how much it may cost to build your add-on guest room and whether your budget can cover it.

Factors to Consider for Your Guest Room

There are numerous things to consider when designing a guest room. Do you want to include a bathroom as part of this guest space? If there’s room in your budget, this is usually a good idea. Also, to keep guests cool during the hot summer months, you might want to install a PTAC a/c unit.

You will need to ensure there is enough storage space, so add a closet that includes clean towels and linens. Then, you will want to consider what to do about the flooring. Do you want carpeting or a hardwood floor? If any potential guests have allergies, you might want to choose hardwood flooring instead of adding a carpet.

Choosing the Best Colors for Your Guest Room

What type of feeling do you want your friends and family to feel upon entering the guest space? A light blue or light green paint color could make your guests feel calm and happy, as if they’re spending time in nature. Brighter colors like orange and yellow are more exciting and will likely energize your guests.

In general, cooler colors help improve sleep, such as lavender, dark gray-blue, icy blue, or soft green.

Most importantly, once you’ve painted the room your preferred colors, decide on the entire color palette before purchasing any bed sheets. All of your comforters, sheets, towels, and window treatments will need to align with the color palette.

Here’s How to Add Luxury to Your Add-On Guest Room

You can take numerous steps to make your guest room luxurious and feel like an upscale hotel. These steps include:

  • Adding a vase of flowers

  • Putting bottles of toiletries in the restroom

  • Having plenty of storage space

  • Soft and comfortable bedding

  • Adding a water pitcher to the guest room

  • Creating a seating area for your guests

  • Implementing some technology touches to the room

Below, we cover each of these steps in more detail.

Add Flowers

Do you have any flowers growing in your garden? Or do you have a florist nearby? If so, you should consider putting some fresh flowers in a vase and adding it to the guest room.

You can also get some flowers at the grocery store, snip the ends, and get a vase for your roses or tulips. These types of flowers are available all year long, so it’s a good choice for your guest room. Sunflowers are also eye-catching and will stand out in the guest space. Your friends and family will appreciate some fresh flowers in their room. Consider exclusive luxury vase designs for your home to add an extra touch of elegance to your flower arrangements.

Provide Small Bottles of Toiletries

Get some small bottles of toiletries and add them to the guest bathroom. You can also purchase small empty bottles and add your own type of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash to each bottle. Ensure that there is plenty of soap available on the guest bathroom sink.

Another great addition is to put an eye mask in the bathroom for any guests who enjoy a spa day. Don’t forget to put plenty of towels in the closet, including hand towels.

Create Plenty of Storage Space

Have you used the closet in the guest room to store old clothes, your children’s toys, and tons of linen? If so, it might be time to clear out that closet and donate those old things. Spring cleaning is a good idea when you’ve got guests coming for a visit.

You’ll need to ensure there is enough storage space in the guest room for your friends or family to unpack their wardrobe. Make sure there are enough hangers for clothes as well.

Add Soft, Comfortable, and Luxurious Bedding

If you want your guests to get a good night’s sleep, then add some soft, luxurious bedding. Comfortable linens and blankets are essential for better sleep. Make sure the linens have a high thread count and are 100% cotton. Add a warm comforter and quilt as well as plenty of soft pillows on top.

A throw blanket positioned neatly across the bed will also bring a pop of color to the space. Your guests will thank you for the comfortable bedding and rave about the luxury of the guest room.

Leave a Pitcher of Water in the Room

Make sure your friends or family members have a simple way to stay hydrated. You can leave a pitcher of fresh water in the guest room. You could also add a bottle of mineral water to their room and leave a few glasses for them.

Ask your guests what type of water they prefer, and then stock up. If you really want to wow your guests, prepare a few of their favorite snacks and put them in a bowl in the room.

Add a Seating Area

Add a simple and inexpensive chair to a corner of the guest room. This seating corner will give your guests a chance to relax with a book or enjoy a drink. It is also an excellent place for them to set out their clothes or appliances.

Your guests will be happy to have a place to sit. You can add an extra chair and a small side table as well. You can put fresh fruit and snacks on top of this side table along with a pitcher of water.

Install a Television and Leave the WiFi Password

With most people having one, two, or even three remote digital devices, it behooves you to leave the WiFi password on a card in the guest room. You can also have a small table where your guests can use their laptops and catch up on emails.

You can also attach a flat-screen television to the wall or dresser in your guest room. Plenty of people enjoy watching some television before going to bed, so your guests will appreciate this extra touch.

Are You Ready to Design Your Luxurious Add-On Guest Room?

This guide has covered the top tips you can incorporate to design a luxurious add-on guest room. When you don’t have anyone visiting, you can still use this room as a playroom for your kids or a home office.

When setting up this guest room, don’t forget to add a vase of flowers, bottles of toiletries, luxurious bedding, snacks with a pitcher of water, and a seating area. Your guests will praise the unique space you’ve created!
