Everything You Need To Know About Hemorroid Treatment

October 15, 2025 by Jeremy Lindy

Hemorrhoids are a common yet uncomfortable condition that affects millions of people worldwide. They occur when the veins in the rectum or anus become swollen, leading to pain, itching, and bleeding. Although they are rarely dangerous, untreated hemorrhoids can cause significant discomfort and interfere with daily life. Understanding the causes, symptoms, and treatment options is essential for effective relief and long-term prevention.

Here’s everything you need to know about hemorrhoid treatment.

1. Understanding Internal vs External Hemorrhoids

Before beginning treatment, it’s crucial to understand the difference between internal vs external hemorrhoids. Internal hemorrhoids develop inside the rectum and are often painless because there are few pain-sensing nerves in that area. However, they may cause bleeding during bowel movements or prolapse, where the hemorrhoid pushes through the anus.

External hemorrhoids, on the other hand, form under the skin around the anus and can be extremely painful and itchy, especially if a blood clot develops. Recognizing which type you have helps determine the most effective treatment—ranging from home remedies to medical procedures.

2. Explore Non-Surgical Treatment Options

For mild hemorrhoids, non-surgical treatments are often highly effective. Over-the-counter creams, ointments, and medicated wipes can reduce inflammation and soothe irritation. Warm sitz baths, taken several times a day, can also relieve pain and swelling.

Increasing your fiber intake and drinking plenty of water helps soften stools and reduce straining, which prevents further irritation. Consistent lifestyle changes can make a major difference in reducing symptoms and preventing recurrence.

3. Consider Minimally Invasive Procedures

When home treatments fail, doctors may recommend minimally invasive options such as rubber band ligation, sclerotherapy, or infrared coagulation. These outpatient procedures are designed to shrink or remove hemorrhoids without the need for traditional surgery.

They typically cause minimal discomfort and allow for a faster recovery time. Consulting a colorectal specialist will help determine which method is best based on the severity and type of hemorrhoid.

4. Surgical Options for Severe Cases

In more advanced or persistent cases, surgical intervention might be necessary. Hemorrhoidectomy, the removal of hemorrhoidal tissue, is often the most effective solution for severe or recurring hemorrhoids.

Another option, stapled hemorrhoidopexy, repositions prolapsed hemorrhoids and cuts off their blood supply. While recovery from surgery may take longer, it provides lasting relief and significantly reduces the chance of recurrence.

5. Focus on Prevention and Long-Term Relief

Preventing hemorrhoids is just as important as treating them. A balanced diet rich in fiber, regular exercise, and avoiding prolonged sitting can all help maintain healthy bowel movements.

It’s also essential to avoid straining during bowel movements and to use the restroom as soon as you feel the urge. These small daily habits can prevent new hemorrhoids from forming and keep your digestive system healthy.

Conclusion

Hemorrhoids may be uncomfortable, but they are highly treatable when addressed properly. By understanding the difference between the two types of hemorrhoids, exploring non-surgical and surgical options, and maintaining healthy habits, you can find lasting relief and prevent future flare-ups. Don’t ignore the symptoms—early diagnosis and treatment can make a world of difference in restoring comfort and confidence in your daily life.
