Acceptance And Commitment Therapy To Live A More Fulfilling

January 16, 2021 by Jeremy Lindy

Today, we are all becoming more open to therapy and seeing someone to talk when we feel like we need help and assistance. One type of therapy you may want to consider is ACT therapy.

You may have heard of the term ‘ACT therapy’ before. Maybe it is something a friend has suggested to you or even a doctor. However, you may be wondering exactly what this type of therapy is; who it is for and what it entails. This is why we have put this post together – to answer all of those questions. So, keep on reading to discover everything you need to know about ACT therapy.

ACT stands for Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. This is a natural, drug-free, approach. It is centred on helping you accept the negatives that you have experienced in your life so that you can move forward and embrace positive new opportunities. This type of therapy is designed so you can live a happier and more fulfilling life, so these negativities are no longer holding you back. It is often carried out by someone who has a doctor of education degree, although the qualifications do vary, and this is why it is advisable to read up on the history of the person offering the service beforehand.

So, who is ACT designed for? There are many people that can benefit from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. It is particularly beneficial for anyone that is suffering from one of the following conditions – addiction, stress, depression, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), chronic pain, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and anxiety. If you are suffering from one of these conditions or something similar, you should certainly give ACT therapy a try. After all, what have you got to lose?

Now, let’s take a look at this type of therapy in further detail, so you can get a better idea of how the sessions work and what they will focus on. The therapist will begin by getting to know you and the problems you are facing in your life. They will do everything to make you feel at ease and comfortable throughout the entire process. There is nothing to worry about, as no one is judgemental here. Once they have done this, the therapy can begin, and it starts with the defusion stage. The therapist will use many different techniques to help you let go of anything that is negative, whether it be feelings, thoughts or memories.

Once you have let go of the past, the next part of the process is acceptance. The therapist will work with you so that you can deal with any negative feelings that happen in the future. They will teach you how to release these feelings so they don’t impact your life. The final part of the therapy is contact with the present. Once negative aspects have been dealt with, you can focus on the here and now, and you will embrace exciting ideas and experiences in the future.
