6 Hobbies That Might Interest Video Game Lovers

January 12, 2021 by Jeremy Lindy

Although gaming is such an enjoyable hobby, too much of it can affect your state of mind. Gamers need to try some other hobbies and take a break from video gaming. If you love video games, try to explore different hobbies in your free time. Look for new, fun, and creative obsessions that will help you overcome possible gaming burnout. When you don’t feel like gaming or you notice that you spend many hours playing, it is time to start looking for different hobbies that will not only give you a break from gaming but will also enhance your focus and problem-solving skills.

On that note, read on to get to know six amazing hobbies that will take your mind off video games for a while.

1. Reading

The way video games make you get lost for hours in mysterious and otherworldly fantasy is similar to the effect of reading books. When you read a book you get to be on your own with a supernatural story that still makes you able to explore this mystical element that you love about gaming. The only difference is that reading is more relaxed and less active, which will provide you with a peaceful state of mind. Crime, action, and mystery books will bring about your inner Sherlock Holmes and help you master strategic video games. If, however, you want to take a break from the fantasy world, non-fiction books will do the trick.

2. Drawing

This hobby will enable you to refine your illustration skills while having fun expressing your creativity. Anybody can draw; all they need is a pen, paper, and some patience. Explore different types of drawing to find what is more enjoyable to you. Portraits, landscapes, and abstract drawing are among various types that may be interesting to you. You can even draw portraits of your favorite video game characters and hang them on the wall. Further, the experts at yourplaymat.com/ explain that you can print whichever design you like and create your own custom playmat. If you don’t know where to start, you can always watch online tutorials that will show you some amazing drawing techniques.

3. Blogging / Writing

One thing that gamers like to do is to become bloggers or tutors, in which they teach people how to play games competently. You can create a youtube channel and teach other gamers how to master video games. You probably heard of the 13-year-old teen who earned over 3 million dollars for winning the Fortnite World Cup solo division. Although he is an exceptional skillful gamer, he has a coach who taught him the strategy behind that game. If you’re camera-shy though, you can still write articles and publish them on your blog. Your writings don’t have to be about gaming necessarily. Write articles, short stories, journals, or anything that expresses your thoughts best.

4. Board and Card Games

Since you love video games with their strategies and planning tactics, you will find board and card games amusing and challenging. These games are mainly focused on having a strategy and a goal to reach, just like any other great video game. You can find countless games that you can play, either alone or with other players. For example, classic card games like solitaire offer a solo gaming experience that tests your strategic thinking and decision-making skills. These games match different ages, skills, and interests. You can even find board games based on your favorite movie or game.

A perfect example would be Cribbage. Cribbage is an excellent board and card game that tests skill and chance, where players aim to be the first to accumulate 121 points through strategic card combinations and pegging on a distinctive board. The objective is to create pairs, runs, fifteen-twos, and flushes in a sequence of play and during the show, with the added twist of the crib—a separate hand that can score for the dealer. For those looking for the digital version of the game, visit Cribbage Online where you can play in easy, standard, and pro modes for free.

5. Puzzles

If you want to work on your problem-solving skills and improve your critical thinking, puzzles are the answer. It requires logic and patience to solve puzzles, so you will find them quite similar to some video games. Challenge yourself mentally and try to solve a thousand-piece puzzle or a  Rubik’s cube, either in one sitting or over a long period. Gamers are already familiar with using their hands to solve complex problems, so puzzles will be a logical choice for them. "And if you are looking for a cool puzzles to start with, check out Unidragon. Their wooden jigsaw puzzles are really cool.

6. Learning a New Language

It might be difficult to decide which language you want to learn, but the idea of speaking to people outside of your primary tongue is fascinating. Learn an easy language that is close to your native tongue. Surprise your foreign co-players with your ability to speak their language and have better communication with them.

The world of video games is thrilling and exciting, which can be addictive to an abundance of players. If you find that you spend a lot of time gaming, you need a break from this fantasy world. Try to indulge yourself in other hobbies so you won’t face gaming burnout. There are plenty of hobbies that can replace video game time. You can use your love for video games to find related interests for maximum benefits.
