Bruichladdich Distillery Releases Octomore Series 17 in the US

Bruichladdich Distillery has released its annual Octomore series, with the first three expressions, 17.1, 17.2 and 17.3, now available nationwide through the distillery’s US e-boutique and select whisky retailers. Made on the Scottish island of Islay, Octomore is known for its high peat levels, measured in parts per million, paired with a balanced, elegant character that the distillery’s tall, narrow-necked stills help produce. Each annual series is limited and cannot be replicated, built around a rotating exploration of barley origin, peat levels and cask maturation.

Octomore 17.1 serves as the series’ reference point, distilled from Scottish mainland Concerto barley malted to 81 parts per million and matured entirely in first-fill bourbon barrels, with notes of salt, smoke and sweetness; it carries a suggested retail price of $204.99. Octomore 17.2 uses the same barley but spends four years in second-fill French oak before finishing in first-fill Port wine casks, yielding notes of pepper, citrus and berries, and is priced at $244.99. Octomore 17.3 highlights single-farm, single-field and single-vintage whisky-making with barley grown on Octomore Farm on Islay, matured across bourbon, Ribera del Duero, Sauternes, Eiswein and Syrah casks and peated to 132.1 parts per million; it is priced at $279.99.

Master Blender Adam Hannett said the 17 series pushes the distillery’s boundaries further, using traceable, super-heavily peated barley from mainland Scotland and Islay matured across bourbon, Sauternes, Port, Eiswein and Oloroso sherry casks. A fourth expression, Octomore 17.4, will complete the series on October 1 and marks the first time that release has been made available in the US, in highly limited quantities, at a suggested retail price of $249.99.
