When a facility commits to standby power, most of the planning attention goes to the generator itself - fuel type, kW rating, run time. It is the automatic transfer switch and paralleling switchgear that routes power between utility and standby sources.

Why the switch matters as much as the source

An automatic transfer switch (ATS) detects utility loss and transfers a facility's load to generator power, then transfers back once utility service is restored. For multi-generator installations, paralleling switchgear coordinates several units to act as one source, matching output and sharing load. Neither component generates power, but a facility cannot use generator power safely or automatically without them.

Sizing and code coordination

ATS and paralleling gear must be sized and coordinated with the connected load, the generator output, and applicable code requirements for emergency, legally required, and optional standby systems, which vary by occupancy and jurisdiction. Coordination studies typically happen alongside generator selection rather than as an afterthought, since a mismatched switch can bottleneck an otherwise correctly sized generator.

Where the lead-time gap shows up

Generator manufacturers have worked to communicate lead times clearly given well-documented supply constraints in recent years. Switchgear and ATS lead times have received less attention publicly, even though custom-configured switchgear can carry comparable or longer build times at some manufacturers - a gap that catches project timelines off guard when the generator arrives on schedule but the switching equipment does not.

How some suppliers are responding

One documented response to that gap has been suppliers carrying in-stock inventory rather than building every unit to order.
