What to Pack for a Weekend Getaway in Europe

December 04, 2025 by Jeremy Lindy

Getting away for the weekend in Europe is a tricky act between being useful and looking good. Packing the appropriate things can make all the difference, whether you're exploring Amsterdam's canals, bouncing from café to museum in Paris, or meandering through Prague's cobblestone streets. It's all about making wise decisions that keep you cozy, stylish, and prepared for any adventure that comes your way because there isn't much room for luggage and there are so many different climates.

Travel Light, Travel Right

Versatility is essential for quick travel. You only need a few classic, adaptable pieces that you can mix and match rather than a whole new ensemble every day.

Start with the essentials: a cozy shirt that looks good underneath jackets and a pair of well-fitting jeans or pants that can be worn from sightseeing to dinner with ease. Another need is a basic blouse or light button-up shirt that may be dressed up or down for any given situation.

Include a neutral-colored cardigan or jumper that you may drape over your shoulders on a windy evening or layer in cooler weather. One comfortable garment will go a long way because European cities frequently chill off after nightfall, even during the warmer months.

Your top goal when choosing shoes should be comfort. For long travel days, a classy pair of walking shoes, such as loafers or leather sneakers, will be a great choice. Put on dress shoes or a little pair of flats if you're going out for a meal or an evening. Keep in mind that cobblestone streets are not suitable for high heels!

Accessories That Do the Heavy Lifting

Style doesn't have to be sacrificed for smart packing. Your secret weapon for getting several looks out of a few basic pieces is accessories. Small gold hoops or studs, a multipurpose watch, and a pair of stylish sunglasses go a long way.

Naturally, a trip wouldn't be complete without the ideal bag. You'll want something that strikes a balance between functionality and style for your vacation in Europe. A crossbody bag is a fantastic option because it keeps your necessities close to hand while freeing up your hands for pictures, coffee, and pastries.

For these kinds of trips, my Harris Tweed bag that I’ve bought from ShamrockGift has become my go-to option. Its rich, woven texture feels opulent and long-lasting, and its lightweight, structured form makes it perfect for travel. It also goes well with anything, from a fitted coat to casual jeans, making it as fashionable as it is practical.

Outerwear That Works Everywhere

Because of the unpredictability of European weather, your weekend wardrobe can be made or broken by the apparel you choose. A light waterproof jacket is ideal for summer, while a traditional wool blazer or a medium-weight trench coat is ideal for spring and fall.

A structured coat in a classic fabric, like tweed, is perfect if your location is colder, like Edinburgh or Berlin in the fall. It keeps you warm and instantly adds a touch of refinement. It's recommended taking a scarf as well, not only for warmth but also to add some color or pattern to your ensembles.

Day to Night

Versatility is a key to nailing the weekend getaway wardrobe. Consider items that are effortlessly convertible from daytime to evening attire.

For instance, with a few simple adjustments, you can dress up a basic black dress or a pair of fitted pants. You may change your sneakers for loafers, add a bold piece, and you're ready for dinner. This flexibility allows you to spend more time taking in your surroundings and less time changing whether you're traveling with friends or a significant other.

Travel Comforts

Once more, minimalism triumphs when it comes to toiletries. Remember that most hotels or Airbnbs provide the necessities, so only bring travel-sized versions of your staples. All you need is a nice moisturizer, your favorite shampoo or conditioner, and a small skincare package.

To save room and cut down on trash, if you travel frequently, think about purchasing solid toiletry or reusable silicone bottles. You never know when you'll need pain relievers, plasters, and lip balm on hand, so keeping them in a little pouch can also be helpful.

A soft travel wrap or scarf is a comfort necessity for lengthy flights or train excursions. It doubles as a pillow, blanket, and adornment.

There are a few packing tips that every experienced traveler knows. There is a lot of walking in European cities, so always pack an extra pair of socks. You cannot compromise on a portable charger, particularly if you depend on your phone for images and directions. Additionally, save some space in your suitcase if you're traveling to a place like France or Italy since you might return home with a few unexpected finds.
