Sleeping In The City: Tips To Help You Create A Sleep Sanctuary In Bustling NYC

September 08, 2021 by Jeremy Lindy

New York City - the city that never sleeps. In the wake of mounting reports of sleeplessness rising amongst New Yorkers, attention is now turning to the effects that can have on one’s physical and mental health. With some of the highest rents in the country and some of the smallest square footage, New Yorkers are no longer trying to save space in their apartment but seeking inventive ways to create an ideal sleep environment amid a bustling city. From the visual design and organization of your bedroom to the finer touches to help you relax, here’s how to create the ideal sleep sanctuary while in the middle of New York.

Focus On Improving Your Air Quality Indoors

New York air is one of the most polluted atmospheres in the world. Unfortunately, studies have also linked air quality and pollution levels to sleep quality. People who live in highly polluted areas are 60 percent more likely to experience poor sleep. It can also increase your chances of sleep apnea. Toboost your rest, ensure your bedroom has adequate ventilation and temperature for sleep (ideally 65 degrees Fahrenheit). Stick to regular cleaning routines to remove any allergens and to ensure humidity levels are low, you can get a dehumidifier.

Keep The Noise Out With A Soundproof Window

New York is not just known for its Broadway shows, skyscrapers, and glorious food, it is also known for its noise. According to a recently filed report, almost 20 percent of New Yorkers say they are often disturbed by noise at home. Whether it is the sounds of ongoing construction, round-the-clock traffic, or noisy neighbors, it can all be interfering with your sleep quality. The solution: soundproofing.

However, the cost of soundproofing a wall can range between $5,000 and $8,000. For a more budget-friendly alternative, try soundproofing your bedroom window. This should only cost around $1,000. You can also choose to use cheaper solutions to sound absorption like insulator roll used under carpets, or adding rugs and door seals.

Invest In Multipurpose Bedroom Storage Solutions

Clutter can cause distractions and stress. Multiple studies have shown that clearing clutter can boost your sleep habits. Unfortunately, real estate in New York City is also not known for being generous in its square footage. Therefore, many renters and homeowners need to get creative to keep their smaller homes organized and clutter-free. Thankfully, there are now many unique storage ideas you can use like installing floating shelves for additional storage or investing in a bed with under-bed storage. Other storage ideas for small bedrooms include vacuum packing your out-of-season clothing, using a clothing rack or S hooks, and changing your headboard for a bed hutch with storage.

Creating the ideal sleep sanctuary may take some time and trial. However, feel free to adjust your bedroom according to your tastes. While some tricks may work for others, they may not be as effective for you. These 3 are a great place to start - even in a city that never sleeps.
