It Takes a Village: How Living With or Close to Family Can Be Advantageous

January 15, 2020 by Jeremy Lindy

When it comes to making big purchases, it's important to perform due diligence. We are encouraged to research the intricacies of what we're looking to buy. This is so we can form our own criteria based on the truths that the experts have said regarding the matter.

An example of a big purchase and a lifelong investment is a house. A criteria for this purchase that isn't widely popular, but subscribed to nonetheless, is the proximity to immediate family and other relatives. When shopping for townhomes for sale in Eagle Mountain, for instance, some homeowners consider how close or far the properties are from their loved ones.

For those who have never pondered upon this idea, here are a few reasons living close to family can be good for you.

Emotional Support

Life often introduces us challenges in the most unexpected of times. Some are easy to deal with, while others can cause great distress. During these tumultuous moments, having a network of support can help with coping.

Living close to family allows us to drop by for some much needed heart-to-heart conversations or comfort in our time of need.

It works both ways, too. Our parents aren't growing any younger. For parents that are going through the stages of grief when it comes to retirement, having some support from family can ease the pains that they are going through.

Parenting Support

Parenthood is no easy feat. Becoming a parent means being responsible not only for your life, but for a tinier and more vulnerable one as well. Given this, parents should expect that big changes are on the horizon. New parents, especially, are likely to encounter a couple of speed bumps as they settle into their new roles as providers.

The process can be made easier by taking advice. As plentiful as advice may be on the internet, they don't always work since kids are unique. Fortunately, all is not loss for those whose homes are close to family.

Your parents are practically experts at the job. Additionally, those older siblings with children can be a great support, as well. Because these people know one's children on a personal level, they can tailor their counsel depending on what the parents need to do to guide their child on the right path.

Economic Support

Finances are one of the major factors that affect our everyday living, and having family nearby can help save us from a couple of expenditures. It starts with the little things, like carpooling to save gas. It can also apply to the occasional family dinners, where everyone can pitch in to lessen a household's expenses when it comes to grocery.

Other ways that family can help with money is through babysitting. Parents who are balancing their careers and parenting may run into situations where they're called into work unexpectedly. Having grandparents or aunts and uncles nearby removes the need to pay monetarily. It also eliminates the screening process to find the perfect match.

Lastly, living close to family can bring us joy in the simplest of ways. We can bond with our parents and siblings more, and doing so can efface any longing we might have felt when we first moved out of our childhood homes.
