How You Can Afford Your Dream Trip Abroad

July 11, 2021 by Jeremy Lindy

Do you dream of dipping your toes in the water while sipping on a cool glass of chardonnay? Have you always wanted to go on a Caribbean cruise? Is there a small part of you that wants to quit your job and go backpacking around the world for a couple of months? If yes and money is the only thing that’s holding you back from packing your bags, you’ll be glad to know that there are some surprising ways that you can afford your dream trip abroad. Now that the pandemic seems to be over and life is getting back to normal, now is the time to leave New York and book a trip to travel abroad.

Leverage Your Assets

So, you own your own home and you’re in a great position financially. Why not leverage your property by taking out a home equity line of credit? Unlike a home equity loan, you can get access to funds as you need them and you only pay interest on the outstanding balance. Take some time to read a review guide online to find out more about the differences between the two options.

Freelance Writing

The best thing about being a freelance writer is the level of freedom it will give you. You’ll be able to work as you travel and finding clients is easy when you set up a profile on freelance sites and advertise your services on Facebook. If you have never written professionally before, it’s a good idea to complete a couple of projects for free so you can learn your craft and gain some experience of what it’s like to communicate with clients.

Work Exchange

Work exchanges make travel a lot cheaper and more accessible. The concept is simple, you can work in exchange for free accommodations and food. Depending on your employer, you may be lucky to also take on a salary. Work exchanges are available in most countries so take some time to research your options before making a decision on what country to go to.

Save

We all have a little more money in our pockets due to being at home for the past year. Don’t splurge that extra cash and avoid impulse purchases when you can use it to pay for your dream trip abroad. Open a savings account if you don’t already have one and be sure to top up the account each week with a sum that you can comfortably afford.

Have a Garage Sale

Do you have a lot of things lying around your home that you no longer need? If so, why not do a big clear out and sell the items that you don’t use/need anymore. Be strict when it comes to what’s going in the ‘keep’ pile and what’s going in the ‘dump’ pile. Options for selling your things include setting up a garage sale, advertising on Craigslist or eBay and putting up a post on your local Facebook buy and sell group. Remember you are selling second hand goods so price each item accordingly and don’t be too insulted when someone offers you $10 for something that cost you $250.
