How to write a research paper: 10 main tips

June 02, 2022 by Jeremy Lindy

More than 2.5 million research papers are published every year. China, the United States, and the European Union account for the majority of the output. It is not surprising that there’s a wealth of information and experience on how to go about writing a research paper that is original, evidence-based, and different.

We’ve done some legwork for you to review best practices, common pitfalls, and effective approaches to writing top-notch research papers. Follow our 10 tips to develop a research paper that will help you stand out.

1. Research question

Make sure you understand the research question well. If it’s unclear, talk to your tutor to get clarity before you do any further work. If it’s a large-scale research activity, you’ll need to develop a detailed methodology.

2. Scope & methodology

Define the scope and boundaries of your research. It’s important to be clear about what it’s not covering. If it’s a large-scale research activity, you’ll need to develop a detailed methodology.

3.Research hypothesis & gaps

The research question defines the scope of your research. It is considered best practice in Top Essay Writing to have a clearly defined research hypothesis. It is what your paper will be validating through a set of planned research activities. In doing so, you should identify knowledge gaps or limitations.

4. Data sources

The above steps, including the identified knowledge gaps, will help you put together a list of authoritative sources you’ll be reviewing to substantiate your arguments. Try to strike a balance between sources that support or challenge your hypothesis. By comparing and contrasting the sources, you’ll ensure the rigor of your research.

5. Outline & style

Create an outline of your paper. Style matters; pick one that your college requires for academic writing. It is important to remember that the difference between an essay and research paper is that research papers have more sections. In addition to an introduction, main body, and conclusion, you’ll need to add an abstract, a description of the methodology, a summary of findings, and a bibliography.

6. Desk study

Take time to review the sources carefully. Use only fact-based data and cite sources appropriately. Don’t forget to cite the sources used. Mix up quantitative and qualitative data. This is a time-consuming effort, so set aside enough time in your schedule.

7. Meetings

Depending on the scope and methodology of your research, you might need to support your work with information gathered through face-to-face meetings. These may include key informant interviews, stakeholder meetings, or focus group discussions. Allow time for analysis and interpretation of your findings.

8. Drafting

Get down to drafting the paper. Focus on the research question paper throughout the exercise. Don’t let yourself diverge from your hypothesis. Everything should build towards reinforcing your key argument. Use clear language and short sentences.

9. Editing and proofreading

Academic writing does not condone grammatical and spelling errors. Edit and proofread multiple times to eliminate them. Use online sources as your aids. There is no perfect tool, so try to use a couple of different ones to catch all possible mistakes.

10. Finalizing and submitting

When you think it’s done, allow a day or two to stay away from the final draft. Sleep on it to come back to the final copy with a fresh pair of eyes. Chances are you’ll need to put the finishing touches on it. Give it the once-over to finalize, and you are all set to submit the paper.

Final Thoughts

Getting organized is of vital importance when writing a research paper. A well-designed start warrants good results. Develop a rigorous plan and stick to it. Don’t give in to the temptation to go off on a tangent.

Only use evidence to support your claims. Ensure that your style, approach, and methodology are in line with the academic requirements of your college. Clean it up before submission.
