How to Turn Your Outdoor Space Into an Effortlessly Chic Entertainment Area

August 15, 2024 by Jeremy Lindy

Summer hits differently on the East Coast. The warm-tempered climate of Martha’s Vineyard juxtaposes the humidity of New York. And yet, people here will tell you they wouldn’t want it any other way.

Outdoor barbecues and sundowners are the order of the day and night. Friends and family come together to enjoy the last vestiges of a season that is temperamental at times.

Some have the advantage of transforming their outdoor area into an entertainer’s dream. Others can’t get past the dust bowl in their backyard resembling a construction site.

If you fall into the latter, you’ve probably thought about tackling your outdoor space as a DIY project. There’s no time or energy and you have no idea where to start.

Don’t fuss. Below, we’ll discuss how to turn your outdoor space into an entertainment area that looks effortlessly cool and chic.

#1 Do a Thorough Clean Up

An outdoor space is a major bonus if you live close to the city. If you’ve neglected it during the colder months, now’s the time to get cracking.

Don’t go at it alone. You’ll need the might of a rubble removal company. They’ll remove everything, from ripped-out shrubbery to old, broken floor slabs.

You should be getting rid of everything that hasn’t been used in a year or is just taking up space. Don’t kid yourself into thinking you’ll use the old barbecue stand rusting in the corner of the garden. Just dump it.

You need extra help if you are a dog parent. Dogs can sometimes leave more behind than their poop. Sometimes, removing animal waste requires more than picking up dog waste and putting it in the trash.

Pet odors can become a problem. Pet waste removal companies often have pet waste deodorization as part of their add-on service. The key is to not only get rid of the unpleasant smell but neutralize it as well and eliminate odor.

Deodorizing treatments are odor-free, non-toxic and use natural enzymes. It’s not only about your outdoor space smelling good.

There are benefits to deodorization. It acts as a repellent against flies and other pests. There’s also the hygienic aspect. Deodorizing creates a healthier and cleaner environment and protects against volatile organic compounds.

A deodorizing treatment doesn’t simply mask fecal or dog urine smells; it neutralizes them completely, says pet waste company Scoop Soldiers. The added benefit is having your property smell fresh.

#2 Alfresco Dining

Inner-city living can sometimes be frustrating. With the limited space, it’s hard to envision an outdoor entertainment area that ticks all the boxes.

Alfresco rooftop dining is all the rage. Many homeowners choose to have a harmonious connection with indoor and outdoor areas. If space allows, consider an outdoor kitchen, says Elle Decor.

Many companies offer bespoke designs with customized stone tops. Chatting with the publication, David Rockwell says that he wanted to create separate zones for a lounging area, dining table and even a hot tub. He achieved this with lush plants and shrubs.

Outdoor barbecues have become a must-have for any rooftop space. Gone are the days of bulky gas grills and stands. Stylish, functional and worthy of any chef’s kitchen, outdoor grills are having their moment.

#3 Keep Your Cool

Hosting summer soirees can be stressful. Ensuring guests are comfortable is even more important when the temperature hits high digits.

A covered porch provides the ideal respite against the heat. For a Hamptons-inspired theme, consider large striped umbrellas or a leafy pergola, Brenna Gilbert, owner of lifestyle brand Feste, tells Martha Stewart.

Investing in outdoor cushions made from breathable fabric such as linen and cotton makes a world of difference, adds Gilbert. She also warns against synthetic outdoor furniture like plastics and metals.

#4 Protect Against the Elements

New Yorkers can experience all four seasons in one day. Always be prepared, no matter what Mother Nature throws at you.

Better Homes & Gardens suggests implementing protective elements like retractable screens and covered decks. Another great idea is to add outdoor heaters. That way, the space can be used throughout the year, not only in summer.

Adding greenery will make the space feel like a calming oasis. Many homeowners are realizing that their homes are their inner sanctums. This encompasses a cohesive connection with nature and fosters mental well-being.

Try potted plants or if space allows garden beds. Once they’re fully grown, you’ll be able to reap the rewards of natural shade protection against the wind and rain.

Your outdoor living space should be something you can be proud of; a place to share with loved ones.

Before embarking on the project, consult an interior designer or decor specialist and they’ll walk the journey with you. The results will be spectacular.
