How this small city in Canada is making millionaires

January 24, 2022 by Jeremy Lindy

Peterborough is a city in Canada that is located on the banks of the Otonabee River. It has a population of over 80,000 people and is home to Trent University and Fleming College.

The city was originally called "Little Lake" and it became "Peterborough" in 1825.

Peterborough is also the county seat for Peterborough County. The most notable landmark in the city is the 1892 cathedral, which has been converted into a public library.

The Cathedral Church of St. Peter was built in 1891 and was consecrated in 1892. It was built to serve as the cathedral for the Diocese of Ontario. Which at that time, included all of Canada, east of Manitoba, and south of James Bay.

Although it is a historical city, Peterborough today is hell bent on making history again.

The city of Peterborough is one of the most prosperous cities in Canada. The net worth of the city is $7.6 billion, which makes it the 8th richest city in Canada. You won’t find many places to get express loans here, but still, a robust financial hub does service the city. In fact, a lot of innovators in the payday loan, Fintech and lending industry may very well come from here.

So what makes it so prosperous?

The city is historically known for its industries such as the production of textiles and other goods, but has more recently become an educational centre with two large universities (Concordia University and Trent University) and one smaller university (Algonquin College). The city has also been home to Blackberry since its founding in 1984, until the company's departure in 2013.

This actually gave birth to a lot of the tech noise that is taking place here right now.

The City of Peterborough is a great place for startups. It has an excellent infrastructure and offers many services to entrepreneurs. The city also offers many programs that are designed to help startups grow and flourish.

A lot of people use the term "startup" to describe any company that is new or small, but there are some key differences between a startup and any other company. Some of the most important differences are in how the founders start the business, how they raise money, and what their focus is.

A startup usually starts with just one person or a very small team, usually not more than five people total. They don't have much capital to start with, so they need to find ways to get funding from investors, or other sources like crowdfunding campaigns / angel investors.

This is where Peterborough lends a helping hand in many ways. They offer local programs and not to mention, individuals and VC’s who do have the expertise, and the funding chops to help the budding entrepreneurs solve some real life issues.

Did you know the the city of Peterborough is a wealthy municipality. With an average household income that exceeds $100,000 per year. The city has a strong economy and an unemployment rate that is lower than the national average at 5%.

No wonder so many tech startups may boom here.

Don’t Forget Tourism

The City of Peterborough is a city in Ontario that is recognized for its natural beauty as well. It is the birthplace of William Lyon Mackenzie King, who was the second longest serving Prime Minister of Canada.

Tourism Ontario has been investing in this city to promote the natural beauty and history of the area to attract more tourists. They have been doing this by promoting through social media and advertising on TV. Looks like it has been working as many are planning to visit this historical wonderland once the restrictions ease down. As there are lots of places to visit like,

The Canadian Canoe Museum. This museum is dedicated to the history of canoes and canoeing from First Nations people to present day. Now that’s pretty Canadian eh?

There is also the the Peterborough Lift Lock. Located on the Trent Canal in Peterborough, Ontario. It was constructed in 1837 and is the only remaining lift lock of its kind in Canada.

The Future of Peterborough

This city was always charming, but now with so much possible buzz in the payday loan and lending services sector here, it looks like Peterborough is literally headed towards the future.

Making millionaires along the way.

As the saying goes . . . “Up, up and away!”.
